I can’t believe I’m admiting this, but I watched “Trading Spouses” last night. First off, I think it’s a horrible, awful show with an even worse premise. Stupid stupid stupid. But I kept seeing the previews for the show over the past week and I could have sworn that the footage was shot in Santa Cruz. Guess what? I was right.
We started watching it and realized that one of the familes, the Abbots, are from Santa Cruz. It was really cool so see footage of my town on t.v. And the place where they went for a walk in the Redwood forest, I actually parked my car in the exact same place last weekend when we went for a walk at the exact same place.
Now the family is a little strange. But they sort of epitomize Santa Cruz. This town has a campaign going on right now called “Keep Santa Cruz weird.” The town is stuck in the sixties. Or it fancies itself that way. If you watched the show you will know that the Abbots walk around barefooot all the time. You might think this is strange. Well, not in Santa Cruz. People do it here ALL THE TIME. I thought it was weird when I first moved here, but now I’m used to it. I see it all the time, people going out for walks in the forest in bare feet. In fact, I’ve seen some people rock climbing in bare feet.
I don’t like how this other woman, this swapped wife, is taken so aback by the Santa Cruz lifestyle. She thinks the kids are brainwashed. I think in the next episode she is going to force them to buy shoes. She also doesn’t like that they speak Chinese in the Chinese restaurant to the Chinese waiter ( I actually kind of think it’s neat that they are learning another language). And the worst thing is that she literally FREAKED OUT when she was in the forest. A leaf blew on her and she got all jittery. The WORST part was that she didn’t appreciate the beauty of the Redwood trees. C’mon lady! There is a very small strip of land in the world in which these trees grow and you are there! They are probably the oldest LIVING THINGS on this planet! How can one not appreciate that?!? Oh well. I guess I can’t expect everyone to think the same as me. But it does boggle my mind.
Granted, the Abbotts are stranger than the average folk. I’ll admit it. But I like thier strangeness.
Anyway, the familes are featured in the next episode of the silly show so catch it next week if you want to get a little glimpse of my little corner of the world 🙂 .
