Cover of A Pair of Socks (Mathstart)

Last night my mom and I attended First Friday, which has kind of been a tradition for us since I moved here a little over a year ago.

Does your town do First Friday? It’s actually kind of cool. The first Friday of every month the galleries Downtown stay open until 8:00 and invite people to tour the galleries.

So my mom and I were wandering around, admiring the art, when I happened upon what looked like my hideous Knitpicks socks! I had to do a double take. I couldn’t believe it. So I walked over to the display and, lo and behold, I saw another pair of socks that I own! For a brief moment I thought my freaking sock collection was on display at this art gallery! then I came to my senses. I looked at the price of one of the socks. $30.00. The artist was selling about 10 or more pairs of handknit socks in the gallery and, apparently, she or he used the same Knitpicks yarn that I have used.

I don’t know. There is a part of me that feels this is wrong. Maybe it’s because I didn’t think of it first. But I don’t know if handknitted socks are so “cutting edge” that they constitute being sold in an art gallery. Now, maybe if they were hanpainted and handspun and the pattern was totally and completely like nothing I’ve ever seen before, then I could see the justification. But just plain old regular hand knit socks?
