Summer 2011 Playlist

Books, Music, Art, Movies

So. When I moved my blog over to WordPress.com I lost all of the categories and tags on my blog. And, being that I am a librarian and can’t stand when things are unorganized, I’ve been going through past blog posts and cleaning things up. It has been rather eye-opening in many ways. Ways that I will probably write about in another post. But for now, music.

I found a post from way back in 2007 where I posted my Summer playlist. What a fantastic idea! Maybe something I should do more often?

Since I’ve owned my iPod I’ve made a playlist for each season. These playlists have become a kind of diary. Two years later I will listen to my playlist from, say, Summer 2007 and be transported back in time. The songs that I choose for a seasonal playlist are kind of random. They are songs that might be really old or they might be songs that are currently being played on the radio. But, no matter what, they are songs that speak to me on some level, be it the music or lyrics.

So here is the music I’ve listened to this Summer.

1) Never Listen To Me by the Thermals.
I can’t get this song out of my head. The whole album is really full of win. You should buy it.

2) You Are A Tourist. Death Cab For Cutie.
I just love them. What can I say. They make me cry but I love them. Except this song. This song makes me happy.

3) Helena Beat by Foster The People.
This was a free iTunes download a few months ago and I totally dig it.

4) Young Blood by The Naked and the Famous.
A song heard regularly on the radio. Still, I like it a lot.

5) My Moon My Man by Feist.
Another radio fave this Summer. I love the video.

6) I Turn My Camera On by Spoon.
I’ve heard this song on the radio station I listen to a lot and I really like it. It tempts me to strut down the street in a funky way on my walk to work.

7) Bruises by Chairlift.
I love this song so much. I love it so much that I’ve taught myself how to play it on the ukulele. Perhaps I will play it for you someday.

8)Where Is My Mind by Pixies.
This song got lodged into my head sometime around mid-July. An oldie but a goodie. (how sad is it that Pixies are an oldie? sigh.) Love this song though. That guitar riff and the sort of cater-walling in the song are the best parts. (also I taught myself how to play the riff on the uke. I’m pretty pleased with myself. also, I fucking love this homemade video.)

9) July Flame by Laura Viers.
This was on my Fall 2009 playlist. I have no idea how I found this song. Free iTunes download maybe? I heard her on the LiveWire podcast recently and she talked about how she came to write this song so I searched my iTunes library for it and had another listen. Back in 2009 I liked the song alright but it didn’t really do that much for me. When I heard it again a few weeks ago I fell in love with it.

  1. Thanks for sharing! Naked and the Famous, Feist and Pixies are definitely rad songs!
you should use youtube videos to illustrate your article when it comes to music. It makes it easier and user friendly!
