Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

  • Sees Bush Move, Shoots Friend

    November 12, 2015

I have this deep need to figure out, and tell, my Great-Grandfather’s story. I would like to be more organized about this and, currently, I am not at all. I only have little bits and pieces that have been collected here and there.

Here is a newspaper clipping my sister found a few months ago, in a Vancouver B.C. paper from when he died.

    image1 (1)

“VANCOUVER B.C. SEPT 8th – C. G. Shawcross arrived here last night with the body of his friend, Wilfrid Butcher (Wilfred Boucher), aged 30, who he killed last Monday on Nelson Island, 100 miles up the coast from Vancouver.

The man went looking for deer. Shawcross saw the bushes move and pumped three shots so rapidly in one spot that all three passed through Butcher’s hear.

Shawcross was held to await the coroner’s inquest.”

I have always had an uneasy feeling about his death, even before anyone started doing research on him. I knew that he was killed by his friend in a hunting accident, and somewhere along the line I found out that his death was due to a gunshot to the heart (I think that info was on his death certificate).

It has always made me wonder. Was it really an accident? This is what I want to find out. This is the mystery.

Oneonta Gorge – Columbia Gorge, Oregon

    November 11, 2015

Another lazy blog post today: Check out my latest pinhole adventure at Pinhole Obscura.

    Moni's avatarPinhole Obscura

The Columbia Gorge of Washington State and Oregon is an amazingly beautiful place. It is carved by the Columbia river and separates the two states. The waterfalls that I have featured here on this blog come from the glaciers of Mt. Hood, which towers over the Gorge. I have lived in the Portland area for 6 years and I have barely scratched the surface of places to visit here.

One of the places I’d been meaning to check out but hadn’t was Oneonta Gorge. I got to check it off of my list at the end of August and I was thrilled.

Oneonta Gorge (pronounced On-ee-on-ta..it’s so fun to say) is located near Multnomah Falls in the Columbia Gorge. It was once a hidden treasure of the area but has gained popularity and is now a very busy place. On hot summer days I imagine it competes with Multnomah Falls…

  • A pinhole view of Seattle’s Gum Wall

    November 10, 2015

The iconic Gum Wall of Seattle is being cleaned today so I thought, in it’s honor, I would re-post a blog I wrote at Pinhole Obscura a couple of years ago. Enjoy!

    The Gum Wall in Seattle
Exposure time: 1 min 35 sec.

The Gum Wall of Seattle. This is, at once   disgusting and captivating. According to Wikipedia it started in the early nineties when theater patrons stuck gum to the wall of Post Alley and placed coins in the gum blobs. Why they did this is unknown. But the tradition carried on (sans coins) and now the walls of the alley are covered in used gum blobs and it is passed off as “collective art.”

Is it art? I think it is. There is something about the collective nature of it that I find completely fascinating. It is repulsive but it is also colorful and pretty in its weird way. And it smells good too! The entire alley smells of sugary sweetness.

  • Pencil sketches

    November 9, 2015

The past few days I’ve been doing simple pencil sketches in my Traveler’s Notebook while waiting for stuff or on my lunch break. I’ve really enjoyed the mental diversion. Having a notebook in the TN works well for me because I carry it with me everywhere anyway so there really is no excuse not to sketch when I have a moment. Here are a few of the things I’ve seen around me this week.

November 6th – stuff on my desk.
    November 7th. Cookies
    November 8th. Lunch
