Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

I wrote a post about The Edgefield: one of my favorite places in Portland. Check it out over on Pinhole Obscura!

The McMenamins brothers have created quite an institution in Portland. They are known for buying historical landmarks and converting them into brew-pubs. These places, I should note, are infamously haunted (which is kind of fun).

The Edgefield used to be the Multnomah County Poor Farm. It seems strange that poor farms actually existed at one time.  I’ve heard “poor farm” used as an expression but to actually see this place in person and see evidence of it’s existence is strange.

The place itself is enormous. It is a campus of countless pubs tucked away in nooks in crannies. There are several restaurants. There is a golf course. There is a vineyard. There is a movie theater (where you can have dinner and a beer while watching the movie!). This place is also an outdoor concert venue. Art is everywhere.

My favorite spot at Edgefield is The Little…

  • Postcard Swap – Round 2!

    Postcard Swap – Round 2!

    January 3, 2014

With the help of Alex of Pinholista.com, we now have an organized way of doing postcard swaps! I have been introduced to Elfster, a really cool gift exchange website that will work very well for our purposes.

We are exchanging postcard sized prints that you either print traditionally in a darkroom, or that you print on an inkjet printer. The exchange will happen once a month and you’ll (hopefully) be assigned a different exchange each time. Each month’s exchange will need to be set up separately so you’ll have an option each time.

Prints should be your own original photography. Make sure your postcard is standard: rectangular and no more than 4 inches (10 cm) high and 6 inches (15.24) long.

If you are interested in participating sign up here!

The deadline is January 14th. You will be matched up with somebody on the 15th. Send your card to your person before the end of the month.

  • One second every day in 2013

    January 1, 2014

Here it is. One year in the making. My year in one second a day.

I really enjoyed doing this and will continue in 2014!

I had some questions about how I did this.

I was originally inspired by Cesar Kuriyama’s project. He created a Kickstarter for an app that he made for this which I bought but never really liked using. His app is called 1 second everyday and I might try it again for 2014. When I first downloaded it I felt like it was too buggy and I had a nice workflow going that worked for me.

I used my iPhone for this entire project. I simply videoed something for a few seconds everyday. It was kind of a gamble because sometimes more exciting things would happen later or I would forget to video the more exciting things earlier in the day so I would have to do something else. But really it was as simple as that. Of course there were days that I forgot to video something. On those days I substituted a photo that I took. I take at least one photo a day on my iPhone so that was an easy fix for missing my video of the day.

Until it got too unruly for my phone. Too many videos.

So I used iMovie on my phone to create monthly videos. Every few days I would edit down clips to 1 second in iMovie and import them. At the end of the month I saved the file to my photos and then save it on my computer which I would then import into iMovie on my iMac.  My iMac had a movie project for this and I would simply add my monthly movie to the project. It didn’t take that much time at all because all of the editing was done as I went along.

I hope this process makes sense. If  you have any questions about it let me know!

  • Goodbye 2013

    Goodbye 2013

    December 31, 2013

Last night I had a nightmare.  I was passenger in a black Volkswagen Bug, my Uncle Will was driving.  We drove into the driveway of my grandparent’s beloved yellow house. When we pulled up I could feel that something was wrong. I got out of the car and my uncle sped away, leaving me alone. I paced in front of the house for a while, afraid. Then I opened the door to go inside. There were two kids sitting inside, one girl and one boy. There were familiar to me in the dream but unfamiliar to me in my waking life. I asked them if they were alone and they said yes. I asked them what happened and they said, “He killed them all.” I said, “let’s get the fuck out of here” out loud because this is when my husband woke me up.

This dream about the slaughter of my family stems from a conversation I had with my mom earlier that evening where we decided that 2013 was the Year Of Death for our family.

So yeah. Not a good year in that way. It was a very difficult year full of lots of suffering and sadness. A very challenging year. But I also think there was a lot of soul growth too.

However, there were some very happy moments and some bright spots. I am going to just copy here what I wrote on my photography blog because I think it says it all:

While 2013 hasn’t been the best for me personally and for my family, it has been a fantastic year for photography. Photography was the light in my life, the thing that kept me together through the tough times. I have met some really wonderful people all over the world because of my passion for film photography and I couldn’t be more grateful. This past year I have collaborated creatively with other photographers, learned how todevelop my own film, learned how to make prints in the darkroom, and became obsessed with pinhole photography. When I look at all of these wonderful things I truly can say that, while it was challenging, it was also a great year.

There are many great things in store for me in the coming year and I am looking forward to it.  I hope you are yours also have a great year. Here’s to 2014!

  • Hello there!

    December 30, 2013

So I signed up for this 52 rolls project. The challenge is simply (ha) to shoot a roll of film a week. I will be blogging the experience on the 52 rolls website and reblogging it here on Blatherskite. I am really looking forward to doing this, but also a little nervous about it because that is a lot of film rolls. I hope I can keep up!
