Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

  • Multnomah Falls

    November 25, 2013

New blog post at Pinhole Obscura!

    Multnomah Falls via pinhole

Multnomah Falls is the most famous of all of the Waterfalls along the Columbia Gorge. For good reason! It’s easy to get too. But it is also magnificent in its grandeur. It flows year round from the top of Larch Mountain (which is also a must-see destination if you are visiting the area. You can see the mountain peaks of Rainier, St. Helens, Adams, Hood, and Jefferson on a clear day). The place is very touristy and generally crowded with people. But if you  find yourself facing the waterfall on the bridge and feel the mist of the water hit you as you  hear the roar of the water as it collides with the pool at the bottom, it is worth it.

  • Yashica Electro 35 – first impressions

Yashica Electro 35 – first impressions

    November 21, 2013

Several weeks ago my little brother offered me a couple of cameras he bought at an estate sale. I declined one and accepted the other – a Yashica Electro 35. I am acquiring cameras at an alarming rate, as you can see from my recent blog posts, so I need to be selective. I was attracted to the Electro 35 because it is a rangefinder;  which I don’t have. From what I read online, they are nice cameras if you can find one that works.

I received the camera on Halloween and immediately started fiddling around with it. I opened up the back and found this:

Yes, indeed. A roll of Kodachrome all rolled up nicely ready to be developed. (this will be the subject for another blog post in the future. Stay tuned.)

I opened the battery compartment. It was completely corroded. As I imagined, the battery leaked all over the place. I spent a morning soaking the base plate in white vinegar and cleaning everything. I was lucky that the leaking only occurred on the base plate and not inside the battery compartment.

The next step was to get a battery adapter. I ordered one from the Yashica Guy and had it in my hands in two days. The electronics all seemed to be working fine! yay! So I popped some Fuji Neopan in it and took it out for a spin!

I am very very pleased that the camera is working perfectly!

However, after all of that, I have to say that I am not completely in love with this camera. I am not used to using a rangefinder and not sure I like it. But maybe I just need to get used to it? I don’t know. The camera itself is pretty (I like the retro look) but it is a beast. It’s huge and  awkward. And the process of focusing with the rangefinder adds to the awkwardness. I was going to put another roll of film in it and try again but I am not sure I can bring myself to do it. I am not excited about using it. Am I missing something?

I am really really enjoying this song lately. I just think it’s beautiful.

  • Give Me This Sterling Moment

    November 19, 2013

I hear the sound of the computer fan. The sound of it is incessant and the heat from it warms up my hands as I type. I can hear cars outside in the distance driving by. I hear the typing of the keys. I am staring at this computer screen and I am seeing the words on the page being typed out. I swallow hard. It hurts my throat. And again, it goes, with the incessant fan and the car. Fan and car. Fan and car. And a door closing in the distance. I sit in this chair and there is a pain in the back of my head radiating toward the front of my head. Not a terrible pain. I wouldn’t notice it if I didn’t “notice” it. I can feel my feet inside my shoes. I breathe and I can feel the air fill up my lungs and my diaphragm. The air feels cool as it goes down. My eyes are tired. My head is tired. I feel sleepy.
