I am a Children’s Librarian living in the Portland, Oregon area. When I am not Children’s Librianing I like to play with cameras and film. I also like playing the ukulele, knitting, sketching, and hiking.
This is a very early memory. So early, that I don’t even know if it really happened. But, regardless, it is something that I remember.
I was camping with my family at a lake. We were all camping in our big tent, or maybe it was out tent trailer. I remember that I was sleeping near my mom. Possibly in between my mom and dad. Everyone was asleep and it was very late at night and very dark outside.
I remember it being very quiet. Quiet but for the one tiny thing I heard. This thing was a voice. The voice of someone crying “Help” over and over again in an almost rhythmic way. The voice was very distant, I remember. And even at my very young age I knew that it was someone on the lake.
I remember being alarmed by this and I don’t know if I woke up my parents, or if my parents woke me up by talking about it. But I do remember feeling a sense of worry because of the vibe that was coming from them.
This memory has kind of haunted me my whole life.
I don’t know if it is real, though. Who knows, it could have been just an animal, or even just my imagination.
I should ask my mom about it, to see if she remembers.
Update: I asked my mom about this and she said that it did, indeed, happen. I was around 4 years old. She also said that I was sick and was running a really high fever. She didn’t think it was someone calling for help, though. She thought it was someone doing some kind of pow-wow dance nearby…or something along those lines. But she did say that she was really frightened, which is why I remember it. I remember being freaked out, as well.
I finished and wore the Aleita Shell this past week and I am very pleased with it! It is made out of a cotton yarn, Tahki Cotton Classic, which I had never used before. I really liked knitting with it! I also loved the vast array of color choices. I will definitely be using this yarn again.
The pattern was interesting. It was pretty straightforward at first. Knitting in the round forever until you get up to the chest area. Then things get really complicated. And you really have to pay attention to what you are doing or things will get screwed up. The top is done back and forth because of that area in the front that crosses over. It is a bit awkward because you are knitting with two circular needles. So there’s that. Then you have to pay attention to the neck decreases, as well as the arm decreases. It’s definitely not a pattern for beginners. It was a challenge.
I do like the way it turned out, though. And I love it as a vest. It will get good use this fall. Here is a link to my Raverly page for those extra details.
A couple of weeks ago I read a delightfully funny book called The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry. It had me laughing out loud in the lunchroom and I had to tell all of my co-workers about what was making me laugh so hard. Books like this are few and far between, I believe, and it is always fun to find one.
The Willoughbys is a satire on all of those old old classic children’s books we all know and love. It is about an “old fashioned family” who likes to do “old fashioned” things. And they like to remind themselves of this all the time. The have parents who decided one day that they don’t like their children and so decide to find a way to get rid of them. The Children catch on to this and they decide to figure out a way to “get rid of” the parents. Luckily they have a cape-wearing nanny to take care of them AND there is a rich old bachelor down the street who saves the day at the end.
As you can see Lowry pulls out all of the children’s lit tropes. There is even an abandoned baby on a doorstep.
This book is even more fun for me because I decided this summer to read all of those old classics (because I never have and am ashamed to admit that as a children’s librarian). Reading these books having The Willoughbys in the back of my mind is a treat.
So go to the library and check it out! It’s a very quick read. It took me about an hour to get through it. And let me know what you think!
