I am a Children’s Librarian living in the Portland, Oregon area. When I am not Children’s Librianing I like to play with cameras and film. I also like playing the ukulele, knitting, sketching, and hiking.
I checked out the Bollywood film, “I Have Found it (Kandukondain Kandukondain)” from the library the other day and watched it last night. It’s a Bollywood adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. With the fantastical musical numbers and everything! (I LOVE the Bollywood musical numbers soooo much).
So. Incredibly. Romantic. Sigh. Oh my god. The last scene of the movie is heartwrenching. It’s bringing tears to my eyes just thinking about it. The male lead, Manohar, and the female lead, Sowmya have gotten in the fight to end all fights and it seems as if they have broken up. They break up through the chained door to her apartment. Sowmya goes up to the balcony to cry while Manohar leaves. He is walking on the street but up above you can see Sowmya on the balcony looking down at him, devastated. He stops and hesitates. He wants to look up but doesn’t know if he should. Then he does. And they look at each other and it is so sad. It is clear that they love each other more than anything else. They gaze at each other for a few seconds and Manohar looks like he is getting up his nerve to do something. And then he does it. He asks Sowmya to marry her. And she says yes. And then She turns around and runs as fast as she can downstairs, and he runs as fast as he can inside and they almost collide into each each other. But then they fall into each other’s arms.
I finished reading this book yesterday evening. Usually when I read in bed it puts me to sleep after a few pages. Not this one. I had to finish it. Just had to.
And then it gave me nightmares.
The book is Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. It is the diary of a young woman, Miranda, who is at the end of her sophmore year in high school. Miranda’s life is very normal. She has fights with her mom. She likes to ice skate. etc. She writes about all of these things in her diary. She also writes about the meteor that is about to hit the moon. Everyone is talking about it everywhere. And some people are worried about it but many people take it with a grain of salt, like it’s something there to entertain them. On the night of the meteor everyone in her neighborhood is outside, waiting for the impact; as if it were a fireworks display. Then it actually happens. It appears in the sky and then hits the moon. And then she hears screaming as the moon becomes bigger and bigger until it fills up most of the sky. The meteor moved the moon closer to the earth.
This causes all kinds of worldwide disasters. The first of which are tsunamis that decimate the coastlines and wipe out all coastal cities and the people in them. The electricity goes out and then stays out for undetermined periods of time. Then the volcanoes start erupting. Like the mega one at Yellowstone National Park. This is the begining of a long, hard story of survival.
As I said, this book scared the hell out of me. But it was goood. Boy was it good. A definate must-read.
The beautiful lilacs are here! Here is one from the bush in my yard. They smell so pretty, too. They don’t last for very long so I made a point of getting a picture of it when it bloomed las weekend.
Unfortunately I think I’m allergic. sigh. I’ve been feeling very lethargic and tired the past few days. And my eyes are puffy.
Tonight I’m participating in the Lilac Parade. Right now it’s raining. Ugh. I am praying it stops soon. I’m going to be in the “Book Cart Drill Team”. Maybe I’ll take pictures :).
