Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

Cover of A Pair of Socks (Mathstart)

Last night my mom and I attended First Friday, which has kind of been a tradition for us since I moved here a little over a year ago.

Does your town do First Friday? It’s actually kind of cool. The first Friday of every month the galleries Downtown stay open until 8:00 and invite people to tour the galleries.

So my mom and I were wandering around, admiring the art, when I happened upon what looked like my hideous Knitpicks socks! I had to do a double take. I couldn’t believe it. So I walked over to the display and, lo and behold, I saw another pair of socks that I own! For a brief moment I thought my freaking sock collection was on display at this art gallery! then I came to my senses. I looked at the price of one of the socks. $30.00. The artist was selling about 10 or more pairs of handknit socks in the gallery and, apparently, she or he used the same Knitpicks yarn that I have used.

I don’t know. There is a part of me that feels this is wrong. Maybe it’s because I didn’t think of it first. But I don’t know if handknitted socks are so “cutting edge” that they constitute being sold in an art gallery. Now, maybe if they were hanpainted and handspun and the pattern was totally and completely like nothing I’ve ever seen before, then I could see the justification. But just plain old regular hand knit socks?

  • Friday Random 10

    November 3, 2006

I haven’t done a FR10 in ages! Since I need blog fodder, why not start it up again?

If you want to play along, simply put your mp3 player on random and blog the first 10 songs that come up! No cheating, either!

    1. Landslide. Smashing Pumpkins. Picsces Iscariot.
      Pisces Iscariot
God I love this song. I love every version that I’ve heard. I think the Dixie Chicks do my favorite rendition. But I love the way Billy Corgan’s voice makes this song sound so sad.
    2. Morning Has Broken. Cat Stevens.
      Cat Stevens - Greatest Hits
God I love this song, too! It’s been years since I’ve heard it! I almost feel like singing along but it might bother my hubby.
    3. Megalomaniac. Incubus. A crow left of the murder.
A Crow Left of the Murder
Incubus rocks. And I totally dig the name of the album. For some reason this song reminds me of how much I can’t stand President Bush.
    4. Denis. Blondie. The Platinum Collection.
      The Platinum Collection
For some reason the only time I ever listen to anything from this album is when I’ve done and FR10. It’s not that I don’t like Blondie, tho.
    5. Down by the river to pray. From the “O Brother Where Art Thou” Soundtrack.
      O Brother, Where Art Thou?
“O Brother where art thou” is one of my most favorite movies ever. I LOVE it. And I love the soundtrack.
    6. Tusk. Fleetwood Mac. The Dance.
      The Dance
Wow. Strange. Must be on some kind of Fleetwood Mac vibe here (since Landslide is originally a Fleetwood Mac song). This was one of my favorite songs when I was but a wee child when it was popular way back in the 70’s (or early 80s?).
    7. Planet of Sound. Pixies. Trompe Le Monde.
      Trompe le Monde
      I practically worship The Pixies.
    8. Sometimes you gotta Make it alone. Money Mark. Napoleon Dynamite Soundtrack.
      Napoleon Dynamite
I thought I would like this soundtrack more. I don’t like it much. Take this song, for instance. It kinda sucks. Loved the movie, tho.
    9. Take me to the river. Annie Lenox. Medusa.
      Medusa
On the other hand, this song is great. I was really into this album when it first came out. And it’s still good, like, 11 years better. good god. has it been 11 years since this came out?!?
    10. Reminiscing. Little River Band. Billboard top hits 1978.
      Billboard Top Hits: 1978
Um. Yeah. okay. This is one of those songs that pops up and you just have to laugh and say to yourself, “This is the shit that was popular in the 70s?”. In fact, there is a little story about this sort of thing right here.

  • Giant Origami!

    November 3, 2006

    pink crane

Okay. First of all, I am not a big Origami person. I have never had a big interest in it ever. But I decided that I wanted to do Origami programs at the library this fall. One each month for September, October, and November. The kids here love Origami and I thought it would be a fun thing to do. Regardless of the fact that I really don’t know what I’m doing.

So, with that in mind..Look what I made! A giant Origami crane! One of my co-workers and I made three giant cranes with big pieces of butcher paper and attached them to the wall to advertise for my upcoming program. Cool, eh?

  • A Halloween Story

    November 2, 2006

One Halloween when I was around 10 years old instead of Trick-or-Treating my mom decided to throw a Halloween party for all of the neighborhood kids. My little brother and I were friends with every kid in the neighborhood, so the party was huge. There were kids everywhere. My parents invited their friends over, too. So the parents had their “hot toddies” while the kids played games, told ghost stories, ate candy, and had fun.

Sometime during the evening my older brother, who is six years older than me, showed up to our little party. He was all dressed up. We couldn’t see his face; He had a mask on and a wig, and a hat of some kind. I think it may have been a top hat. We couldn’t see his face but of course we knew it was him. And we all thought it was so cool that he was there. He didn’t say a word the whole time he was there. I think he was trying to act creepy and scary but we all thought it was funny.

This carried on for about an hour or so. We were eating candy, enjoying the games. All was well in our little world.

Then the front door opened. And in the door walked my big brother. What? How could this be? Isn’t this guy all dressed up in the mask and the top hat my big brother? All of the kids in the room looked at my big bro with wide, surprised (and slightly confused) eyes. We were frozen, like deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming car. Together, our little heads all panned over to look at the “other guy,” all of us simultaneously realizing the horror of the situation. The guy in the mask and the top hat, the one with whom we had been chummy all night long, the guy that we assumed was my big brother was not my big brother. The “other guy” was, indeed, a creepy weirdo.

This realization hit all of us at the same exact moment. The room was dead quiet. It was at this moment that the “other guy” seized the opportunity to say, simply, “Boo.” And then total chaos ensued. Every single one of us screamed at the top of our lungs and took off in every direction possible. There were kids everywhere. There were kids sliding down stairways, running in circles, finding hiding places, all while screaming at the top of our lungs.

Eventually I ended up downstairs in the basement where I found my best friend hiding in the closet, shaking with fear. We hung out downstairs for awhile and then eventually ventured upstairs again. We found out that the adults played a trick on us. The “other guy” was my best friend’s dad. Her dad was generally the quiet type and we never once suspected the “other guy” to be him in the least bit. It was a brilliant scheme. And I’m sure the adults had more fun than the kids that Halloween night.
