• Yahoo! News – Schiavo Case Exposes Political Divide in U.S.

Although Republicans publicly rejected any ulterior motives, a memo surfaced over the weekend calling the Schiavo case “a great political issue” and saying that Christian conservatives would be “excited” by the Senate debate.

That is exactly what this is. Republicans don’t give a rat’s ass about Terri Shiavo. They are pandering to the religious right. I am so sickened by this display. I am embarrassed to be an American right now. This goes so far beyond the way it looks on the surface. This is the federal government taking it upon themselves to change descisions that state courts have decided. If they don’t like something they just change it . Checks and balances? who cares! I don’t know about you, but I find this frightening. I’m not a lawyer, but I am doubtful that what they are doing is Constitutional. But are they going to be reprimanded for crapping all over our Constitution? No, they aren’t. The neo-cons in congress and in the White House are totally out of control.

And what is all of this about “right to life?” What about the innocent people – children – who are being violently killed by this pointless war going on in Iraq? That’s okay? Killing innocent Iraqis is okay, but God help us if we follow the wishes of a woman who has been in a vegetative state for 15 years and take away her feeding tube so she can die in peace.

The hypocrisy is mind boggling. All of you religious-right people, don’t think for a minute that this administration gives a crap about “right to life.” They don’t The facts speak for themselves. No, what they are doing is whoring themselves so that they can get your support and votes. Don’t think for a minute that they give a shit about Terri Schiavo.

  • Yahoo! News – Congress Announces Deal in Schiavo Case

As a deal in Congress was worked out to have federal courts decide Terri Schiavo‘s fate, emotions swelled outside the brain-damaged woman’s hospice room Saturday, with protesters arrested after they symbolically tried to smuggle in bread and water on her second day without a feeding tube.

For the love of God! Let this woman die in peace!!!!

I am just so mother-fucking pissed that the Federal Government is involved in this! WTF?!? Why? Well, come to think of it, the answer boils down to The Exterminator: Delay. God Damn it. God damn Delay.

Terre posted a comment on another post regarding this subject. I have to whole-heartedly disagree. However, I do appreciate the politeness conveyed in the comment.

Terre seems to have an issue with the husband. The husband has abandoned this woman. The husband needs to let Terri’s parents take care of her. Terre states, “why should he care what happenes to her, unless he did something to contribute to it?” Well, let me try and explain this in way that is related to my own experience.

My own husband has told me, over and over, that he never, ever wants to be kept artificially alive. Not under any circumstance. He means it. I am his wife and I know him better than anyone else in the world. So I know he means it. He has never written it down. Christ, we are in our thirties and we don’t have kids. We’ve never thought about writing this sort of thing down. He just assumes that if he ever is in this situation that I will respect his wishes because he trusts me.

Terri Schiavo’s husband was put in that horrible situation 15 years ago. His wife was only 26 when she had a heart attack and was put in this vegatative state. She told him that she would never want to be kept alive and he wanted to respect her wishes. Unfortunately, her parents can’t let go of thier daughter. They are selfish. They don’t give a shit about what she would have wanted. They just don’t want to let go. They are holding on to some silly notion that other people have recovered from a similar situation. I seriously am skeptical, but that’s another rant.

It has been 15 years. Terri’s husband has moved on. He formed a loving relationship with another woman and has even fathered a child with her. Can you blame him? Well apparently some neo-christians do. But put yourself in his position. You would move on, too. You would. Don’t deny it. However, he can’t divorce his wife because he still cares about her and wants to carry out her wishes. He believes so strongly in his wife’s wishes that he refuses to settle for money. He doesn’t want to hand this over to the parents because he believes in what his wife told her before she became a vegatable. She did not want to be kept alive like this. Her wishes are important to him. So he stays married to her.

I would do the same damn thing. I know that my husband would never, ever, want me to keep him alive artificially. He has made this very, very clear. As difficult the descision is, I would respect his wishes.

I flipped on the news this morning and somebody was talking about this issue. I think he was a professor at a university…I couldn’t tell you who this guy was, but what he had to say was so true. This happens ALL THE TIME. People have to make this descision with thier parents or grandparents everyday. My Father in law had to make this descision with his mother. She was being kept alive by dialysis. He had to decide to stop the treatment. Some people are kept alive with a respirator and a desicion has to be made to pull the plug. You dont’ think dying this way is as painful as starving? It’s all bad. Death is not pretty. That is why doctors give patients drugs to make the experience less painful for the patient. It happens all the time. The God Damn Congress didn’t intervene and tell us to not stop dialysis on my husband’s grandma! That would be ridiculous! It is a family decision. It’s a difficult, horrible descision, but it is a personal thing. I am just utterly sickened that this Schiavo case has gone this far. Congress should not be involved. Damn these parents for not letting go of thier poor, suffering child. She did not want this. They have exploited her and it is sick.

Interesting little NYT article about evangelical sk8 boarders. This is how I met my husband, at Skate Church. I had a friend who was a “counselor” there and he invited me one night. My husband (and his two brothers) were avid skaters who liked to skate the ramp there. I met him the first night I went and knew I would marry him the moment I met him :).

Skate church was kind of funny because the poor skaters would have to sit through a sermon before they were allowed to skate. I guess the ramp was really good and attracted a lot of people because they seemed willing to be put through that. There were a lot of skateboarders who became born again christians because of it. This was the begining of my 3 year adventure in evangelical christiandom. It started with skate church and got weirder and weirder. We finally got out of it when we began questioning what we were being told to believe. We began questioning the “word of faith” movement led by Kenneth Hagin. The pentecostal church that we belonged to was heavily into the Word of Faith. We got out of that by reading the book, Christianity in Crisis, and, ironically, reading this book started us on our road to getting out of Christianity altogether. I guess once you start questioning things you realize how absurd the Christian religion is. At least that’s how it was for me. Granted, it served it’s purpose in my life. I really needed the born-again experience at that time in my life, I guess. But getting mixed up in fundamentalism I didn’t need at all.

  • Yahoo! News – Subpoena Delivered to Schiavo’s Hospice

The Senate Health Committee has requested that Terri Schiavo and her husband, Michael, appear at an official committee hearing on March 28. Earlier Friday, a House committee was issuing congressional subpoenas to stop doctors from disconnecting the tube.

Okay, I’m probably going to sound cold-hearted by saying this, but I think this is a grand waste of the Federal Government’s time! Don’t they have much more pressing issues to deal with? This is utterly ridiculous that they have to hold a friggen hearing for this issue.

This is nothing more than selfish parents and a selfish husband who can’t work together! If the woman (who was in her twenties when she entered this vegetative state) told her husband that she would not want to be kept alive like this, shouldn’t that be respected? And, frankly, who in thier twenties (or thirties for that matter) has a living will?!? I certainly don’t. I probably should, but I don’t. And I’ll bet most twenty year olds don’t even think about it. So then why can’t her selfish parents respect what she verbally told her husband?!?

This story just sickens me. It’s sad. All around it’s sad. It’s sad that this poor woman is being put through this. They need to let her go. People die. We all die. It’s a fact of life. We need to accept it. This woman is all but dead. I just read in an article that her brain is gone. It’s dead. Her brain stem is what is allowing her to breath and blink and do the most primitive of functions.

It must be a horrible descision to make, to decide that the best thing to do is “pull the plug.” I hope I never have to be in that position. But sometimes it’s the best thing to do. At some point one has to let go.

This should be a descision left up to the family. Period. The government should not be involved in something so personal. I am pissed that these people can’t work this out and have now gotten the Federal-fucking-Government inovolved! I thought Republicans were the ones who believed in smaller government, in letting individuals make personal descisions. Now they are trying to pass laws telling me whom I should marry, whether or not I can have an abortion, and, now, whether I can let my loved one die in peace and go, peacefully, to his or her Maker. I don’t like it. I don’t like it one bit. When will this nightmare end? We have got to get these neo-con/neo-Christians out of Washington.

Update: Apparently, the feeding tube has now been removed. read the news here.
We’ll see how long it stays removed, though.

Some views on this issue in the blogosphere: Joe from AmericaBlog talks about how creepy congress has been this week, what with thier hearings on Steroids and the Schiavo case, and The Rude Pundit, as always, just tells it like it is. I love that. Oh, and here’s some craziness on the freeper side. Good Lord. Apparently they want to bring in the national guard to protect Terri Schiavo.

MercuryNews.com | 03/17/2005 | Valley house and condo prices continue to climb

For all those waiting for a home-price “bubble” to explode: It hasn’t happened yet.

The median price of Bay Area houses that sold in February was nearly 20 percent higher than it was a year earlier, reaching a new record of $569,000 paid for resale single-family houses.

Un-fricken-believable. How the hell did I end up in the most expensive place to live in America?!? The article states that even the price of condos are up, now up to over $400,000.00. Can you believe that? How on earth can anyone afford these prices? I certainly can’t. And it sucks. It sucks because I have worked my ass off to get to where I am today professionally. I have finished school. I have earned my dues. I am making a salary that I always thought, all of my life, was a good, decent salary. Granted, I’m not rolling in dough or anything, but I always thought I would, AT THE VERY LEAST, be able to afford to buy a house. The American Dream. Apparently, the American Dream doesn’t exist for me, as long as I’m living here in the Bay Area.

My mom has been looking for houses in Spokane. The average price? around $120,000. Some have even been UNDER $100,000. That is sheer craziness.

I so need to get the hell out of Dodge.
