John Kerry’s Speech – Democratic National Convention Official Site

This was another fantastic speech. Even better than Obama’s. This speech was full of hope and stressed the unification of our nation. Click the link above to go listen.

    Here is a snip:

“You see that flag up there. We call her Old Glory. The stars and stripes forever. I fought under that flag, as did so many of you here and all across our country. That flag flew from the gun turret right behind my head. It was shot through and through and tattered, but it never ceased to wave in the wind. It draped the caskets of men I served with and friends I grew up with. For us, that flag is the most powerful symbol of who we are and what we believe in. Our strength. Our diversity. Our love of country. All that makes America both great and good.

That flag doesn’t belong to any president. It doesn’t belong to any ideology and it doesn’t belong to any political party. It belongs to all the American people. “

Listen to this speech (or read it) and you will agree with me: this is a president we can all be proud of.

  • USA Today Drops Ann Coulter

    USA Today Drops Ann Coulter

It’s official. Ann Coulter really is a nutcase:

“Here’s how Coulter opened the column: “Here at the Spawn of Satan convention in Boston, conservatives are deploying a series of covert signals to identify one another, much like gay men do. My allies are the ones wearing crosses or American flags. The people sporting shirts emblazoned with the ‘F-word’ are my opponents.””

Just a little word to all of you Rebublicans out there who actually believe this rhetoric: Democrats and liberals love God, wear crosses and display American flags proudly. We honestly, really do. I know it’s hard to believe, but it’s true. And I find it hard to believe that there was anybody wearing a t-shirt “emblazoned with the F-word” on it. Unless it was that little green leprechaun that Ann saw following her around. Yeah, that must be it.

  • Camping at Memorial Park

    July 18, 2004

R and I went on our first camping trip! I’m so proud of us. We’ve been talking about it for a year. Since I’ve been on vacation, I thought it would be fun to go camping overnight after I got back from Spokane. We went to Memorial Park in San Mateo County. It’s about an hour drive from us, and in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It’s up Highway 1, off Pescadero road. It took us about a half an hour to pack since R had everything we needed in his Pack. We picked up some cup-o-noodles at Safeway on our way for our dinner.

The campground is so much more beautiful and awesome than I thought it would be. I think it is coolest campground I’ve ever been. Even better than Yosemite, because it’s smaller and the campsites are bigger. You don’t feel like you are on top of the neighbooring campsite. Our campsite was awesome. Right below us was a little stream and we had several Redwood groves. There are lots of hiking trails there so we got some good hiking in. Had a great time! Definately going to go back. 🙂

  • Farenheit 9/11 again

    July 11, 2004
    Cover of "Fahrenheit 9/11"
    Cover of Fahrenheit 9/11

I went to see Farenheit 9/11 with my family last night (i’m in Spokane visiting). Again, it just blew my mind. It is such a great film. It was interesting because the theater was packed, even after being in theaters for three weeks! AND in Spokane, which I kind of always thought was rife with conservatives. It was cool to see how the audience reacted. In Santa Cruz, people clapped when the injured soldier said he would switch parties and become very active in the Democratic party when he got home. In Spokane, that statement didn’t get much of a reaction. However, the part that really got a reaction in Spokane was when the marine recruiters were scoping out the poor side of town for possible recruits. Someone in the audience yelled out something that I couldn’t hear, then another guy behind me yelled “Keep recruiters out of the schools!” and then everyone in the theater clapped! I thought about it and realized that there are so many boys in Spokane getting shipped off to Iraq. When the movie was over everyone clapped and then just sat there until the lights came on. It was like the audience didn’t know what hit them.

Seeing it for the second time, it was still very good. Go see this movie! And then vote Bush out in November. And get all of your friends to see it, too.

  • All by myself

    July 5, 2004

Many years ago I bought a set of 5 CDs: Billboard’s top hits from the 70’s. Each CD contains the top ten hit of the year. I kind of listened to it a couple of times and put it away. About 5 years ago, when we were living in Family Student Housing at UCSC, I heard my hubby upstairs just cracking up. Wondering what he was laughing at, I went upstairs and found that he had found this stash of CDs and he was listening to the songs and laughing at thier utter corniness. I mean, they are either really manic – from the disco scene, or they are just so god damn depressing that you want to just take a gun and shoot yourself in the head. And then there are songs like “Undercover Angel”:

“Undercover Angel, Midnight fantasy, I’ve never had a dream that made sweet love to me”

This is the music that we grew up on! Oh.My.God. So we just sat around, listening to this music and laughed until we cried.Well, the other day I dug out these CDS and put them on the IPod and decided to have some fun listening to them this morning. And I’ve got to say, “All By Myself” has to be the most depressing song of all time.
