The kids at my old Alma Mater have got some good ole fighting spirit! Makes me proud to have gone to Rogers High School.

Students at Rogers High School in Spokane’s hardscrabble Hillyard neighborhood are upset about being told not to use the community’s name during cheers at sporting events.

Hundreds of students chanted “Hillyard pride” and carried signs during Thursday’s protests.

Meyer (the school’s principal) met with several students after the protests.

“Our point has been made,” yelled Matt Smith, a junior who was among the students who met with Meyer. “If we don’t get effective action, then we will be back here.”

Smith said he feels Meyer needs to learn more about Hillyard.

“I believe she kind of frowns a little bit on Hillyard,” Smith said. “She hasn’t lived in Hillyard. She doesn’t know about the community or the businesses.”

Hillyard, as “hardscrabble” as it might be, has lots of history, and lots of neighboorhood pride. There are several generations of people who live here and they are proud of thier community. I think it’s despicable that the principal banned the use of the name of the neighboorhood. It’s an insult to those of use who are from Hillyard! What, it’s not good enough? It makes the school look bad if “Hillyard” is associated with it? The freaking high school used to be named Hillyard High School!

Anyway, good for the kids for having the courage to stand up for what they believe in!

Oh, and this page on Hillyard Skatepark’s website actually has some nice links to websites about Hillyard history.
