Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

  • On cultivating tiny bonds with strangers

    July 14, 2015

I had the most wonderful interaction this morning on my run. It was both a boost to my ego and my spirit all at once. I stopped for a few seconds to say “hi” to a basset hound that was waddling up to me and it’s owner, an older gentleman I have nodded at when we pass each  other, wanted to tell me something. He said, “I have to tell you, you are really looking great. I’ve watched you running by me for the past year and I’ve noticed that you are really shaping up. Good job!.” I was delighted that this stranger would take a moment to give me kudos! It really brightened my morning.

It also reminded me of a train of thought I often have while running.

For years I have been an early morning runner and, no matter where I’ve lived, I always run into the same people in the mornings when I run. We usually nod and smile and say “good morning” as we pass each other and that’s it.  I often wonder about these little interactions – these little tiny bonds that form with these strangers that share the same time and space with me three times a week. It’s hard to intellectualize because it seems like it happens on a level that is more intuitive. But, indeed, a kind of bond is being formed with these people.

It was nice to be reminded of this today, and to be encouraged by a so-called stranger.

  • Into the wild purple yonder

    July 10, 2015

    Into the wild purple yonder

Today’s photoblog image was taken near my house at the local park. I walk by this scene everyday and I’ve photographed it many times. I love the way the two Douglas Firs frame the entrance to the forested area behind them. I’ve actually taken this path many times, as well, and there is something kind of spooky about it. These two trees and this path feel like the beginning of an adventure to me.

  • Tibetans robe dreamt awake*

    July 9, 2015

Last night I dreamt of a brass door.
It keeps playing on the edge of my memory.
    Teasing me
    Asking me to open it.
But when I look at it it goes away.
All I can do is stare at it
    In my mind.
    I am powerless.
    The orange robe of the
    Tibetan monk sits firmly
    In my mind.
Standing there in the ancient field
    Naked except for the robe.
    He stands there by himself
    awake.

  • The Year I turned 40

    July 8, 2015

The year I turned 40 I, for some reason, decided to take a self portrait everyday using my iMac camera. I, honestly, am not sure what possessed me to do this. But I did it like clockwork every morning for a year and then some. It didn’t matter what my emotional state was and it didn’t matter what I looked like at the moment. I took a photo.

A couple of years ago I posted the photos on my blog. They were up for a few days and then I became too self conscious and made the post private. There is so much raw emotion in there. That year was really an emotionally trying year. So many life-changing things happened. I got a new job.  I moved to Oregon. My step-father died. My mom almost died of Pneumonia. I got really sick.  I got several tattoos. I moved again.

Recently I re-discovered the iPhone app, Everday. I switched my daily selfie ritual to that app years and years ago when I discovered it. Since then I have deleted it and re-installed on my phone probably 5 times. Each time deleting all of the self portraits I’d made up until that point. Well, I re-installed it a few weeks ago and noticed that they made some improvements and upgrades. One of those upgrades was that you can import photos into a new timeline. So I imported my “year that I turned 40” photos and made them into a video. I feel much better about sharing a 15 second video, rather than a gallery of photos. So here you go. a year (give or take) of a very emotional part of my life distilled down into 15 seconds.
