Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

Roll 27 – Olympus XA and Cinestill

    July 9, 2014

My latest on 52 rolls! Raf and I spent the weekend at the beach a couple of weeks ago and I took a lot of photos. There are tons more to share in future posts.

    Moni's avatar52 rolls

After seeing the wonderful results on 52 rolls, I wanted to try my hand at Cinestill too. I loaded it up in my new favorite camera: the Olympus XA, and headed to the beach for the weekend. Unfortunately, I am not immediately in love with the results I got with this film. There are a few that I liked (shown below), but generally I am feeling kind of “meh.” My negatives were quite scratched. And there was a bit too much grain for my liking.

The problem, I realized, is that I didn’t shoot this roll under the right lighting conditions. For my next roll I will follow the instructions and shoot using the correct lighting.

  • Big spiders

    July 7, 2014

I don’t remember what the impetus was, but I found myself today doing a Google search for “Big Spiders in the Bay Area.” The first result is this website from Berkeley which informs us of spiders most frequently encountered  in the Bay Area.  Looking at these photos makes me feel a fear that I can’t fully describe in words. It is a fear that I feel deep inside me, at the core of my being. The kind of fear that makes me physically react with nausea.

My spider research today was prompted by a memory from when I was a nanny living in Menlo Park.  I was in the sitting room hanging out with the little girl I took care of when I saw a creature hanging out in one of her Lego structures.  It was a creature that I couldn’t pinpoint because I’d never seen anything like it. I guess it was a giant spider – that is the only way to describe it. It wasn’t a tarantula though because it wasn’t fuzzy. It had a shiny surface. It was horrific and large and it scared the shit out of both of us. I decided that I didn’t know what to do with it so the best course of action would be to ignore it and hope that it would go away. We left the room and played somewhere else and it, in fact, went away and I never saw it again. But in the back of my mind I wondered where it went and if I would encounter it again. I also wondered if I imagined the whole thing because I have never seen anything like it again.

I had a conversation with the parents of the little girl about it and they encountered one of these “things” as well – in the same room. The mom said that the thing tried to run away from her and she had to stab it several times with a pen to kill it (!!!) but it didn’t die, it ran away. The father encountered it later and killed it by putting it in the garbage disposal. Hearing about the demise of this creature kind of horrified me, as scary as it was to encounter it myself. It’s presence scared me, yes. But did it deserve to die such a terrible death? I’m sure it didn’t!

I have never seen one of these things again, and when I asked around about it I never got any answers either. Nobody I knew in the Bay Area had ever seen anything like the thing I described.

Something (I can’t remember what) prompted me to remember this and search Google to see if I could figure out what this thing was. And I did. I’m pretty sure it was a Calisoga longitarsus, otherwise known as a False Tarantula. I know it by looking at the picture. I will never forget what it looked like.

  • The Great Transatlantic Pinholga Filmswap Project

    July 4, 2014

    flowers on the water

Today’s image is from a recent film swap I did with my buddy Brendan, which has led to a project I recently started, and that I am going to share with you today. I am really excited about it!

Several months ago I did a film swap that involved sending my Pinholga to Ireland so that Brendan could double expose over the roll I had already shot. He then reciprocated by shooting a roll, re-winding it, and delivering the camera back to me when we met in Amsterdam. I re-shot the roll in Portland later that month.  The photo above is from the second roll. You can see my favorites from the two rolls here and here.  You can read Brendan’s blog post about it here.

It was a lot of fun seeing my camera on location in Ireland and I was tempted to ask him to send it along to someone else, but I didn’t really have a solid plan in my head for where it should go so I put the idea on the back-burner.

Well. I found out last Friday that the Traveling Yashica is on it’s way to me.  I am going to shoot two rolls with this camera, One for me and one to rewind, put back in the camera, and send back to Hamish where he will re-shoot the roll.

Thinking about this  was the catalyst that brought my idea to fruition: The Great Transatlantic  Pinholga Filmswap Project.  It will be a traveling camera project, like the Traveling Yashica, but with a film swap, pinhole twist. Two rolls of film will be shot. The camera will come loaded with film that has been shot and rewound by the previous person. Then they will shoot another roll, rewind it, and send it on to the next person on the list. And so on, and so on.

I asked a few of my pinhole photography friends if they were interested and I received lots of great feedback and have a nice list of people that will take the project through for a few months!

The idea came to me on Friday and by Sunday morning I’d created a blog for my project. It even has it’s own Twitter and IG hashtag! You can follow it’s adventures on social media here!

If you are interested in the project you can follow the blog:

If you are interested in participating let me know! The more the merrier!

I am so excited to see how this all plays out!!

  • Roll 26 – A 3d Printed Pinhole camera

    Roll 26 – A 3d Printed Pinhole camera

    July 2, 2014

I have lost the whole concept of time regarding this project, but here is my 26th roll.

    Moni's avatar52 rolls

A few days before I left for Amsterdam I ordered a Schlem P6*6 3D printed pinhole camera from Todd Schlemmer. Todd lives in Seattle, a mere hop, skip, and Jump away from where I live near Portland. So I fully expected to receive the camera via mail after our trip. However, Todd was planning on going to Amsterdam as well so he offered to deliver the camera on WPPD in AMS! It was very exiting to receive it on this most special day. My husband used the camera that day and enjoyed it very much. You can see my husband’s WPPD submission with this camera here in the WPPD gallery.

When we got back from our trip I ran some color film through it. I really loved using it! I love that it has a lens cap, it makes exposures less shaky (see this post about that trick
