Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

The Sound of Summer Fireworks Under the Overpass*

    August 7, 2013

    Under the overpass
    I lay here only just
    breathing
    In the dark
    The sound of the
    nearby creek
    Tickles my ear and
    I want to crawl
    toward the sound to the
    Cool water
    But all of my
    bones are broken.
    “This will be my
    Last Summer” I think
    As I lay dying
And then I wonder if that
    Will be my last thought
    Or maybe it will be
    The memory
    of you
    And me
    and the
    fireworks.

*Hi there. Sometimes my mind goes to dark places. Now you know. Ahem…This was a poetry writing exercise from the book Writing Poetry From The Inside Out. The exercise is to come up with a poem out of four words. The appendix of the book has a section of word clusters and I like to shut my eyes and put my finger on a set of words and see what comes out. This dark poem/story came out of these four words a couple of weeks ago. And then, weirdly, I found this lone shoe in the forest. I think I read too much Stephen King when I was a teenager.

  • Pinholing myself and others

    August 4, 2013

    drum circle
I am drawn toward pinhole photographing people, myself included. I am fascinated with what might happen on film when movement is blurred for longer periods of time. Maybe a person will show up on the film. Maybe they won’t. If they do show up, how will it happen? In the photo above I used my Holga and photographed a drum circle I participated in last month the evening of the super moon. This photo was exposed for 20 minutes. I wanted to make sure something was in focus the entire time so I placed the camera close to the candle holder. I wasn’t sure how this would turn out at all because there was a ton of movement. At one point someone came and sat down on the table the camera was on and I was afraid they were blocking the view, but that wasn’t the case. Or if they did, there was enough of the exposure prior to them sitting down for it to be captured on film.

    meditation

I thought I would also experiment with self portraits. I captured myself meditating for 10 minutes. I love the way my image is there and is not there. Again, I used my Holga. This time I used 400 speed film, Fuji. I don’t like the subdued colors of this film. I prefer the saturation of the Ektar (used above).

    Afternoon at the waterfall pool

This was taken with my Zero 2000 at a waterfall in the Columbia Gorge on a hot day. I think it is a 2 minute exposure using Ektar 100. Again, I dig the movement of the people. It’s not a perfect photograph but It is one that has me thinking about photographing crowds of people.

  • Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreshadow

    August 2, 2013

    The sun rises over France

I thought doing a weekly photo challenge would spark me out of my blogging ennui. This week’s challenge is foreshadow. I felt like it was kind of a vague but  I went through my Flickr archive to see if anything jumped out at me. And this is what jumped out. This is a photo that I took from the plane as we were flying over France, before we were ready to land in Paris. I will never, ever forget this moment. I was in complete awe. The only other time I have felt this  way was when  my plane descended into New York City for the first time more than 20 years ago – this excitement of entering an unfamiliar place and not knowing what was there. It is a surreal experience. Especially so because it is a half a world away from home. I looked down and studied the landscape as the sun rose over France. I wondered what this place would be like. I wondered about the adventures I would have in the next few days. I hadn’t a clue what to expect.

I think a lot about this trip, the very act of flying across the world to another place. 16 hours before this photo was taken I was in the Portland airport and it was early in the morning. It was dark when we parked our car at the long term parking lot and took the shuttle to the terminal. 16 hours later I was in a place where it was now morning. How incredibly weird. We time traveled. And we ended up in a different world. A different space.

Today as I was getting ready for work I looked in the mirror at myself and, for the first time in my life, I admired my soft, womanly curves. It was nice to look at myself and not be critical.
