Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

  • Again, The Golden Gate Bridge

    May 13, 2013

I have written about my experience walking across the Golden Gate Bridge in March. It wasn’t a pleasant one. When I came home and after I wrote my blog post about it I found myself wanting to watch The Bridge again. I don’t know why. This bridge has been haunting me.

What I did not tell you about that day was that I was also shooting photos on a roll of film that I would send overseas to Brendan for another round of his International Film Swap project.

The photos from the bridge are as haunting as the bridge itself. Kind of spooky, actually. Here, have a look:

Mother Mary watches over the Golden Gate

Honestly. Does this need any explanation? It gives me chills.

    Resting place
    Final Resting Place

I showed this to Raf and the first thing out of his mouth was, “Final resting place.”

    Bridge or mortuary?
    Bridge or mortuary?

When I shot this sign I thought it was kind of funny and rebellious. If you look closely you will see that right under the word “Bridge” is the word “Mortuary” (from Brendan’s double exposure). Indeed, the place feels very haunted to me. Lots of very sad souls there.

There are more really cool photos from the swap that are less morbid and I will share them in another post. Stay tuned!

My exposures are from SF (obvs) and Brendan’s exposures are in Dublin.

  • Weekly Photo Challenge: Pattern

    May 10, 2013

    water drops

This week’s Weekly Photo Challenge is “Pattern.” The first thing that popped into my head was a day trip to Mt. St. Helens a couple of years ago. I was fascinated by the patterns of the trees. Because of the devastation of the eruption in 1980 the trees growing there were very symmetrical  I imagine this is because they all started growing at the same time. When you looked out into the forest it looked like fractals and there was something very odd and unnatural about it. I wanted to post a photo of that but, sadly, I didn’t take a photo that day that illustrated my observation.

So I went prowling around in my Flickr stream.

I started at the beginning. This led to a whole other train of thought as I looked at the evolution of my photography over the past 8 years. I saw photos that I completely forgot about. Like the one above (which I think is a decent enough illustration of patterns in nature).

Looking at these photos from the future, I can say that some of them aren’t half bad at all. Some of them are not as good as I thought they were at the time, granted. But some of them are pretty good, if I do say so myself (not an easy thing for me to do).

I find it interesting that I gravitated away from Digital photography. There was a very prevalent  little pull that caused me to move in the direction of film photography. It is interesting how that happens. I remember when it happened. It started with this little camera.

I am really enjoying this journey. Photography has always been my creative outlet. I loved it when I was primarily shooting digital and I love it now that I am shooting film. I love both for very different reasons.

  • Tell Me Everything You Remember About Kindergarten

    May 9, 2013

My first day of kindergarten was the first time I would take a bus anywhere. The yellow bus picked me up right in front of my house. My mom reluctantly handed me off to the bus driver and away I went to school. The trip to school was fine. It was getting back home that was the problem. I didn’t know what to do. The bus driver drove and drove and drove as each child was delivered home. I ended up being the last person on the bus. I sat there, all alone and afraid. The bus driver asked me where I lived and I don’t remember what I told him. I remember being very afraid. I am sure I cried. Eventually we made our way back to my home where my mom was waiting for me. I am still not sure why this happened. I think I was too shy to tell the bus driver to stop.

I remember the snack that first day. I remember being give Cheez-its for the first time for my snack and describing them to my sister later on after I came home. I thought they were the most delicious and wonderful food I have ever eaten. I was fascinated by thier size and the tiniest hole in the middle of them.

I have a vague memory of playing Wallball and Four Square.

I remember feeling out of place. I remember being shy with the other kids.

    20130508-090623.jpg

This is a photo of my Granny Mary again, a little older and with my mom. I have always loved this photo. It is weird and wonderful to see my mom as a baby. Today when I look at it I wonder what camera my Grandpa used. I came back from Spokane having inherited several old cameras in varying conditions. I wonder which one them might have been used for family snapshots.

More on the cameras in another post!
