Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

    May 10, 2012

It seems like every few months I go through a period of time where I want to cut myself from the tether that is  Facebook.  Today is one of those days. I have a love/hate relationship with the social media website. Well, love might be too strong a word. Maybe it’s more like tolerate/hate. On the one hand, I really like how it connects us to each other. I love some of the conversations I have had on there. I love that I can connect with my nieces and nephews and brothers and sister and friends and acquaintances.  I love connecting and interacting with people.

However, lately I have logged onto Facebook and have felt bad after my session. Why is this? I guess, if I were being honest with myself, I would say that this is probably some kind of reflection of myself. Facebook is just a website. It can’t make me feel bad. It’s an inanimate object. I determine my feelings.

This is a nice thought.  However, I can’t deny the feelings I get sometimes when I log on. I am not alone, according to a Stanford study.

How does Facebook make me feel? Inadequate. Invisible. These feelings cause me to overcompensate by feeling the need to overshare. Then I look at this reflection of myself  and I dislike it very much. Self-loathing.

I don’t like the facade, the fake person, we create in order to look good to others. I wonder if this is just human nature but in real life it is easier for us to see through because there is body language and other, non-verbal ways of communication. It’s just easier to see through all of it in person.

I kind of want to just let it all hang out on Facebook. Instead of writing about all of the awesome things I am doing I want to post every mundane, boring thing I do. I want to talk about how crappy my day was. I want to talk about how, instead of going running like I planned to do, I was lazy and read my book instead. I want to be the totally imperfect person that I really am. Not the fake Facebook facade that I have created.

I am trying to reconcile my feelings. I wrote most of this post yesterday when I was feeling down. Today I am feeling better. Obviously those negative feelings are there in the undercurrent and they surface on those bad days. I want to take a look at them and figure them out.

I would really like to hear your thoughts. How do you feel about Facebook?  Do you like it? Hate it? Are  you one of those who has deleted your account? If so, why? What made you cut the thread?

  • Wayback Wednesday: that day on Lake Pend O’Reille

    May 9, 2012

A few months ago I had a conversation with my niece on Facebook. It was her 21st birthday and, apart from that making me feel old, I was remarking on how long it had been since I had seen her. I recalled that the last time I saw her was in 1997 when I was visiting Spokane and the family took a day trip to Lake Pend O’reille in Idaho. It was a fun day. I recalled such details, down to what I was wearing and what I was reading. I was about ready to start my American Literature degree at UCSC and was preparing myself for a class by reading one of the books. It was terrible. The Sorrows Of Young Werther was the name of it. Regardless, I remember being very happy that day. The future was full of promise and happiness and it seemed like I could feel it.

I found the photos from that day at my mom’s house a few weeks ago!

The camera that these were taken with was interesting. It was made by Kodak. You had to buy special film for it and could choose between three sizes of prints. The choice was made on the camera. One of the choices was panorama.

Here are some other shots from the day:

  • Lady with a walker

Taken in Spokane. Original version here. I like the square crop better. What is it about the square that is so appealing? I don’t really know. But I like it very much.

  • Weekly Photo Challenge: Unfocused

    May 7, 2012

I played around with the Holgaroid again today. I am still trying to get the hang of it. The photos tend to come out underexposed. And I’m really not sure about that crazy vignette. I still want to play around with image transfer, though. That is the whole reason why I got it.

The theme for this week’s photo challenge is unfocused. I’m gonna go ahead and throw this one in the ring. Sort of unintentional but there you go.

I bought a Yashica Mat tlr camera yesterday from KEH.com, as was suggested by a couple of you. Thank you SO MUCH for your input and suggestions! I feel confident buying online from them, so thank you. I am SO EXCITED to play with it!

  • 24 hour church of Elvis

    May 6, 2012

    20120506-184846.jpg

What a beautiful, fabulous day! The sun was actually shining! After our usual weekend trail run, Raf and I decided to head into Portland. He wanted to show me the 24 Hour Church Of Elvis. It’s really kind of silly, and certainly weird. I snapped an iPhone photo of it (above). It’s probably the result of somebody’s LSD trip. But entertaining for a few moments? Yes indeed. I loaded up my Holga with the Ektar film I bought a couple of weeks ago and wandered around downtown, snapped a few shots at the Saturday Market (which I’ve never been to). I am looking forward to seeing how they turn out. I chose colorful subjects because I was told that this film has highly saturated colors.

Oh I hope this nice weather holds out. I like it. I want more of it.
