Foolish gibberish

    SCOBY
    The SCOBY

As I mentioned yesterday I got the SCOBY from my coworker. He had it in a glass jar for me with some very detailed instructions on what to do with it. There was also a cup of fermented kombucha tea in the glass container as well. The instructions said to pour the kombucha tea into my plain tea (pre-steeped) and then stir with a wooden spoon. After I did that I took out the SCOBY and had a good look at it. As you can see it looks like a small pancake. It’s very thin. It’s very slimy. It smells very strong. Rafael said it smelled like feet. I don’t really think so, but it has a vinegar-y smell.

So then I put it in my jar, dark side down. I covered it with a few layers of paper towels and secured them with rubber bands. Then I placed in a bag and put it in a dark place. I is supposed to be left alone for 8-11 days, so I will check on it then. I’m really looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Raf may have lost his appetite for Kombucha after seeing and smelling the SCOBY. It is an acquired taste, that’s for sure. Hopefully ours will turn out tasty.

  • Making Kombucha Tea

    November 4, 2009

    Kombucha Tea Step1

One of my new co-workers is an herbalist, I found out during my first week. I asked him if he knew where I could buy Kombucha tea here and he said that he actually made it himself and he could bring me in the “mushroom” starter so that I could make my own. Yay! So he told me to get some tea prepared and he would bring me in a SCOBY.

So I did, as you can see. Last night I boiled a gallon of water with a cup of sugar. I had some green tea bags on hand so I used those and I bought some blueberry herbal tea to flavor it a little. I used about 5 green tea bags and 3 blueberry tea bags. I let them steep for a couple of hours and then let the tea cool to room temperature overnight.

When I came into work today the SCOBY was in the fridge waiting for me, along with some instructions on what to do.

Since I need blog fodder for the month I thought I’d share this process on the blog. So tonight I’ll take a picture of the SCOBY and will update tomorrow. This is so exciting! Homemade Kombucha for me!

  • Mirror Lake

    November 3, 2009

    Zig Zag clouds

On Sunday we decided to go on another hike from the book 100 Hikes in Northwest Oregon & Southwest Washington. We chose, Mirror Lake. The trail head is up near Government Camp, just on the side of the road on Highway 26. The trail itself is gorgeous. It climbs, zig-zagging along the slope, the entire trip up to the lake, which is about a mile and a half. I am very out of shape and don’t do hills very well and i did get out of breath. But I distinctly noticed that I had no problem keeping going. I didn’t really feel the need to stop. I’m not sure why this was. I think it is probably due to the clean air here. It felt so good to be able to actually take deep breaths as I was hiking uphill (Spokane’s air was noticeably bad and even just walking to work could be difficult for me sometimes).

When we got to the top we were greeted with a fork in the path. We decided to go left and we ended up at the lake. It was very pretty but we didn’t have a view of Mt Hood from where we were. He followed the trail around the lake which was a little bit snowy and icy in some places. But the view was worth it, as you can see above. It was absolutely spectacular. Mirror Lake, indeed.

SnowmanOn the view side of the lake are beautiful little campgrounds. In one of them we found this little melting snowman. How cute! Then I realized that they must have gotten lots of snow of there earlier in the week for someone to have made a snowman. It’s weird, because we get nothing but rain down here, but are only 30 miles away (give or take). It’s funny what a difference a few feet in elevation can make on the difference between rain and snow.

  • Crafty Monday: Fingerless Mitts

    November 2, 2009

mittsWelcome to day two of NaBloPoMo 2009!

My new job has been fabulous. However, my office is really chilly. I am planning on bringing in a little space heater but I decided that I also needed some fingerless mitts to keep my hands warm while I typed. I found some alpaca in my stash and cast on the Berry Hill Fingerless Mittens pattern. They turned out really cute and will be very useful this fall and winter. In fact, I took them on a little hike with me to Mirror Lake and they made great Photographer’s mitts (more about the hike tomorrow). I used some alpaca yarn that I bought from a little yarn shop in Ocean Park, WA. It is from a local alpaca farm and is from a critter named Freedom. It’s gorgeous, soft yarn. In fact, I used some of it to for a hat for my step dad while he was going through chemo.

If you would like to see the Ravelry info you can find it here.

    Happy Monday!

  • November 1st

    November 1, 2009

First of all, before I do anything, I need to wish the Mister a happy birthday. Happy Birthday, my love!

Secondly, I decided to do NaBloPoMo this year. I’ve been out of the blogging game, it seems, and it seems that this might be a good way to jump back in. What I really, really want to do someday is NaNoWriMo but that’s not happening this year. I’m hoping at least blogging once a day in November will get me back into the habit of writing everyday. I’ve missed it.

How was your Halloween? Mine was really fun. I worked at the library for three house, passing out candy dressed as the Cat in the Hat. In the town I live in the had a “Trick or Treat” trail in which all of the businesses were open to pass out candy to the kids. It was amazing, how many kids showed up for this. And the parents were just as much fun as the kids. The costumes were fantastic!

Today is supposed to be nice so I’m looking forward to exploring a new hiking trail. Have a great day!
