Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

  • Crafty Monday: What I'm Working On

    March 9, 2009

Silk Garden Cardi Last weekend I sewed a skirt and actually sewed in my first zipper. And I didn’t completely lose my mind in the process! It was quite an accomplishment! But I decided to not take a picture of it. It’s black and I didn’t think it would make an interesting subject. So instead I thought I would show you what I’m working on at the moment. The sweater on the left has been a really fun project. It’s actually yarn from my Silk Garden Clapotis, frogged about a month ago. I am following the directions for the Classic Raglan Cardigan in Barbara Walker’s Knitting From the Top.  I have a favorite sweater that I bought a Banana Republic several years ago and it’s getting worn out. I thought I would make something with a similar shape. I’m really liking how this is turning out! It’s going to actually fit, which is a good thing.

Gail's Scarf The other thing I’m working on is a scarf made out of some handspun yarn that I’ve had in my stash. I told you about how I’ve been carrying around a box of my friend’s dog’s fur for years, right? Well have spun some into yarn and I’m making her something with it. This is my third attempt at a lace scarf. I finally found something easy enough. I hate knitting lace. I think I have come to realize that it’s the charts. I can’t wrap my mind around those charts. I don’t know why because I’m generally a visual person but I just have the hardest time reading charts. I do so much better when instructions are written out. And it helps when the pattern is very easy.

  • Forsythia

    March 3, 2009

This is a project I’ve been thinking about for a long time. It’s Forsythia a pattern by Symeon North (aka Pippi Kneesocks) in the book Spin to Knit. The pattern is VERY simple. It’s a top down sweater. You cast on the stitches for the neck, knit ribbing for an inch, and then add in your handspun yarn and start increasing until it fits over your shoulders. What could be easier?

The blue yoke was knit with my own hand-spun yarn. I’ve had this in my stash for a couple of years now and have been dying to make something with it. It was the absolute perfect amount for the yoke. The rest of the sweater was knit with Cascade Ecological Wool. I used about 1 and 1/4 hanks. These are some humongous hanks of yarn. And it’s heavy worsted so you get to use larger needles. So, yeah. Fast knit. Which I like.

I’m very happy with it! It’s a very comfortable, snugly sweater and one that I will wear on cold weekends. If you want more details you can visit my Ravelry project page.

  • Goodbye Squeaker

    March 2, 2009

    Squeaker

My mom called me a couple of hours ago when I was waiting for Raf at the dentist office. She called to ask me if I could make her something out of her dog, Squeaker’s, fur. I said, “Yes, but why? What happened?” She told me that they had to put her to sleep. She was on her way home from the vet’s office when she called.

I had just seen her yesterday morning when I went over to visit. She was her usual, sweet self. She was happy to see me and brought her favorite chew toy up to me, wagging her tail. As I usually do I petted and hugged her and just gave her some love. I love my mom’s dogs and look forward to seeing them when I go over there.

I guess a little while after I left they couldn’t find her. So they looked around the house and found her in the basement. Something was wrong with her leg and, upon closer inspection, they noticed it was broken. They took her to the vet this morning where the vet determined that the reason why her bone had broken so easily was because there was a tumor in her leg which made the bone really soft. The only thing the vet could do was amputate the leg. My mom couldn’t bear that for Squeaker so she had her put to sleep. She had the vet shave off some fur from her back so that I could spin it into yarn and make something with it.

I’m so glad I went over there yesterday so I could see her one last time. She was the sweetest dog in the world and I’m going to miss her.

  • Running on the Beach

    February 28, 2009

    Seabright Lighthouse

I am thinking, right now, about how I used to run in my Seabright neighborhood in the early mornings. I would run down Seabright Avenue by my favorite house, the one with the lovely big front porch. I would run by the cat sleeping on the fence. I would run by the shops down the street. Sometimes, during certain times of the year, birds would swoop down and attack my hair. I would know by the sound they made when they would do this. And it always seemed to happen on foggy days, which made it more ominous. So I would try to avoid getting attacked. Sometimes I would turn right and run down a neighborhood street. I would look at the houses and dream of living in one of them. Then I would reach the magnificent beach. I would run up above on the sidewalk overlooking it. I would face East and I would watch the sunrise as I ran. It was usually glorious. Sunrises are almost always more incredible than sunsets in my opinion. I would run down the harbor toward the lighthouse, then I would maneuver the rocks where I would end up on the sand. I ran the length of the beach near the waterline where the sand was more stable. Everyday there were people who walked their Irish Setter dogs and I became very familiar with them. They let their dogs run free on the beach without a leash. Normally this is one of my pet peeves but it didn’t bother me during my morning runs on the beach. The dogs were so into everything around them and they were so happy to be running free that I enjoyed watching them. I would time my runs for 30 minutes. The halfway beep would happen around them time I was on the beach running West so I would turn around and backtrack until I was home again.

I loved these runs and miss them so much. This was my time to myself. I felt perfectly safe. I felt very happy and alive during these times. I loved the routine and I loved seeing the same people out walking their dogs or running every morning. I would go out very early, like around 5:00 so it was heartening to see others up as crazy-early as me.

I miss this. I don’t feel like I have this here in Spokane. and I miss it.
