Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

  • The house on Warren Road

    March 17, 2009

The house I lived in when I grew up was split level. The yard was very large. We would often play in the front yard. we would have races in the yard to see who was the fastest runner in the family. When you walked in the front door and looked to the right you would see the split level staircase. The stairs on the right would go up to my Parent’s room and my room, and the one on the left would go down to my brother and Sister’s room, and then the basement to my older brother’s room. The staircase had an avocado shag carpet covered in a plastic runner. The plastic runner had little rough divets that would scratch when you ran your hand over it. The plastic was see-through. I remember it being dirty and dingy from years of use.

Looking to the left you would see the kitchen. and if you went straight you would go into the living room. Let’s go into the kitchen. The kitchen was divided into two parts. The cooking area and the eating area. The kitchen was divided by a bar which I would sit at often. I recall the predominant color in the kitchen being yellow. The kitchen table was a flimsy looking thing. It was oval and it was made of a dark wood on top, metal legs. The kitchen area itself was rather small. There was the sink right under the window and, going counter clockwise, was the refrigerator, the door, and then the stove. Next to the stove was the trash compactor. All a deep brown color.

There was a large entrance into the living room from the kitchen. There was a very large picture window. I would often sit at the window and watch to see when my mom or dad were driving up Adams road, which meant they were almost home. There was a piano at that end of the room where I would practice, until my mom sold it when my parents got divorced. The other end of the room was darker. There was no window because the fireplace occupied most of the space. The fireplace had a nice hearth that sat up from thefloor so you could sit on it, but it would be very uncomfortable because of the scratchy pebbles the hearth was made out of. We had our couch on the opposite end of the fireplace and the television next to that. The stereo was on the wall next to the couch.

Note from the future (9.9.2011): I just discovered this little bit of writing that has been private for two years. It kind of made me happy to read it so I’m making it public, even though it seems unfinished. I’m not sure what the point was.

  • Crafty Monday: Weaving!

    March 16, 2009

WeavingI got some birthday money so I decided to buy a loom with it. I’ve been tempted to start weaving for a few years now. I think the thing that brought me over the edge was the Winter 2009 issue of Spin-off magazine. There are a couple of articles on beginning weaving and that just was enough to make me take the plunge. So I did. I went to Paradise Fibers on Saturday (fricken FANTASTIC store by the way. They are primarily an online store but they invite the public to the warehouse and it’s AWESOME). I bought a Beka 10″ Rigid Heddle child’s loom. It comes pre-warped with a project already started so I started weaving right away. It was so much easier than I thought it would be. At the moment I’m still working on the warp that came with the loom and adding in some different kinds of yarns to see what it looks like. I’m having fun with it! I’m trying to figure out how to make everything even but I imagine that will come with more practice. Next I am planning on making a scarf with some Silk Garden that I just bought. The warp with be some left over Eco Wool from my last project.

Silk Garden Sweater in progressIn knitting news, I’m still working away on my Silk Garden cardi. I just finished the sleeves and now I’m on to the body. I love this project! It fits me perfectly. I’m actually taking the time to figure out the math to make it work. So I’m proud of myself! It will be hard to go back to a regular pattern after this. it is really awesome to make something knowing that it is actually going to fit when I’m done.

  • The man in the bathroom

    March 13, 2009

Last night right before we closed the library a man was found, collapsed, in the Mens bathroom. The fire department were called. The Paramedics came. Apparently the man wouldn’t let them help him. He kept pushing them away. My co-worker had to unscrew the door to the stall he was in to get to him. As he was propping the guy up he started to lunge at my coworker. There was a bottle of Whiskey sitting next to him. It looked like it was unopened.

As we were closing I noticed that there was a jacket, gloves, and a bike helmet sitting on one of the chairs next to the window. After some discussion, we thought it might belong to the man, who was now being put on a gurney. So I went out to them and asked a Fireman if these could be his things. He said, “they probably are” and then took the things from me.

I looked at the man. He was probably about my age. In his late 30s, early 40s. He looked like anyone. He didn’t look like someone I would associate with being a drunk. He didn’t look homeless. He just looked like a normal. guy.

I felt really bad for him. He was hurting bad enough to do this to himself and I just felt really bad. The Policeman who was there, on the other hand, was less than compassionate. He laughed at him and joked about it with the Fireman. Treated the guy like a loser. I just thought it was really cruel, the way the man was treated by the “authorities.” Clearly the man is sick and needs help. Treating him like he’s not a human being doesn’t help. Granted the man was fighting any attempt at help but that doesn’t matter.

This is what I hate about the cops in this town, and maybe in general. It’s this general lack of compassion. It seems kind of common around here with people. There is a news site that allows comments on their stories and the things that are said about vicitms are utterly horrifiying. Blame the victim. It’s the victim’s fault for being out that early in the morning (in response to someone getting mowed down by a car, dragged for a mile, and dying), The man who committed suicide is a self righteous asshole for killing himself. I’m so sick of this attitude.

    Fire Hose

    March 13, 2009

I think this is the last of my photos from the Bay Area trip. Time to start taking more pictures. The weather this week has totally sucked. We got a blizzard earlier in the week and then stupid-cold temperatures. Like in the single digits. Which is very odd for this time of year. It usually starts warming up in March.

  • A poem about turning 40 by my husband.

    March 11, 2009

    Oh Lordy, Lordy
    You’re turning 40
What will you do to get by?
    Here’s an idea
    When others do see ya
    And ask ’bout your age
    Tell a lie.
    -R.P.

These things just come to him out of thin air.

    And my annual self portrait:

    Me on my 40th bday
