Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

  • A little Sam

    December 8, 2008

    a little Sam
I was walking by the New Book Cart at the library and saw the most awesome book. It’s called Wool Pets by Laurie Sharp. Inside are instructions for making the most adorable figurines made out of wool and created with a felting needle. I saw the instructions for the Border Collie and I knew I had to try it. So on my way home from work I stopped at JoAnns and bought a felting needle and some black roving. I already have a truckload of white roving.

This is what I completed that night. The body of the creature. I may have added some of the black fur. But, really, this little guy only took a matter of a few hours. It’s far from perfect, but not bad for a first time needle felter!

Oh, I made this little guy because my mom has a a border collie named Sam. I had this all finished and ready to give to her on Saturday and she loved it!

I had lots of fun doing this! I’ll probably make some more of these in the near future. If nothing else, they will make great gifts.

    Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture
    Image via Wikipedia

I saw this on a blog that I lurk on and I loved the idea! And because I’ve been interested lately in writing poetry I thought I’d try it. What you do is you listen, randomly, to the first 20 songs on your mp3 player and write down the first line of each song. Verse it out into stanzas with four lines and you have your poem. The 21st line is the title or your poem. The result on the blog I got this from, The Reading Zone, turned out to actually make a lot of sense!

And that is why I love Found Poetry (and this is a type of Found Poetry). It is an interesting exploration of context. For example, I might find some random note laying on the street. Because of my past experiences I attach meaning to it and create a context for it.

So let’s try this, shall we?

Josie, You’re My Source of Most Frustration.

I love you so much it hurts
    I might be wrong.
The prophet speaks his language, reeks,
As I lay this song to rest.

    I hate the TV,
This is an imitation of a kiss.
Few of the sins of the father are visited upon the son,
It’s not that complicated and you ain’t gotta believe.

    Take cover in these words,
I want a girl with a mind like a diamond.
    Ziggy played guitar,
    It was January 1963.

Cease to resist, giving my goodbye
You’re the devil in me I brought in from the cold.
    True about my taste
Geology is digging through my brain.

    In my little town,
    That’s the truth now, baby,
    Mama’s got a squeeze box
    I cannot disguise.

  • The Road by Cormac McCarthy

    December 6, 2008

The RoadI just finished The Road by Cormac McCarthy. I am quite blown away by it. For a summary of the book check out Good Reads or Amazon. Basically, it is the story of a boy and his father in a post-apocalyptic world, walking along a highway to find a better, safer place.

The writing was stunning. It was so wonderfully succinct. I loved the relationship between the father and son. The Father’s love for his son was so beautiful and I loved it in contrast with the bleakness of the world. For me, that is what made this story. I wondered about what happened to the world at first, but after awhile it didn’t matter to me anymore. It doesn’t matter. I believe the story is this father and son’s relationship.

The book is bleak and there are some frightening and gory moments in it. I hesitated to read it while I was eating lunch sometimes.

It was recommended to me by a patron on a really dark, dreary day. I had just finished telling him about my step-dad. He saw the book on the shelf and came up to the reference desk and said, “you should read this. It’s the perfect book for a day like this. Sit down with a glass of wine and just enjoy the writing.” He explained that the story was kind of bleak but it was worth it. He was so right! I’m glad he recommended it. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read and I look forward to reading more from Cormac McCarthy.

    First snow

    December 5, 2008

This is my most recent photo on my Flickr Photostream and it was taken last Friday! I need to do some uploading. I think everything I have taken this week has been crap, anyway, so you’re not missing anything.

  • Crafty Monday: The shawl

    December 1, 2008

The shawl, originally uploaded by CraftyMoni.

I’ve been working on this thing since March! It was my “Fire” project for Project Spectrum: the elements. I finally buckled down and finished the darn thing and I’m so happy it’s done. I used Malabrigo Lace Weight. I love the color but don’t have anything in my closet to wear with it.

That’s all I have to say about that. Here’s my Ravelry page for more info.
