Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

  • Do you remember your first roll of film?

    August 24, 2017

I was inspired by the first line of this blog post by Eve North on  35mmc.  It made me think about when I first started this hobby of photography.

I don’t have a clear memory of my first roll of film because photography has been a hobby of mine since I was a kid. I can’t even remember when I started. I know I was in elementary school. Probably 4th or 5th grade? I remember that I had an point-n-shoot camera and my mom must’ve given me film for it and had it developed at the local convenience store. I might have paid for the developing and film out of my allowance. I will have to ask her sometime how this hobby started!

Anyway, it got me thinking that this might be a fun series to explore on this blog: my first photos.

I will start with this one. I love this photo. It is a photo of my dog, Crackers. She was such a sweetheart. We got her as a puppy when I was 5 and she died when I was in my early 20s, so she pretty much grew up with me. I even named her. I often have dreams about her.

Clearly I didn’t grasp the concept of composition yet. I was more about capturing moments on film at this stage….

    A walk in the Wildwood

    August 23, 2017

Not feeling up for running yet, but I still need to get some miles in. I opted for a walk instead. We went to one of my favorite places, Wildwood Park. I even shot some pinhole! 🙂

  • Today

    August 22, 2017

Today is all about antibiotics and pain killers. Maybe that 12 mile run wasn’t such a great idea after all.

I’m also thinking about yesterday’s eclipse and what an amazing experience it was. But I’m also feeling some regret. Looking at a map, I was sooo close to the path of totality. Maybe 15 miles away. I feel like I could’ve made more of an effort to try to see it.

On the other hand, I did have to work that day. And I had a really fun time, totality or not.

I’m also really regretting forgetting my pinhole camera. That was just really dumb on my part, and I can’t go back in time.

I’m already making plans for 7 years from now when the next solar eclipse crosses the USA.

  • Total eclipse in the park

    Total eclipse in the park

    August 21, 2017

Well not quite a total eclipse. Here in the Portland Oregon area we were at 99% totality. The library had a viewing party at a local park where we handed out viewers and had some other fun activities. People started lining up to get viewers at 8:00 am, when we arrived to set up. The eclipse actually started a little bit after 9:00.

Right before we left the library we decided to grab a pack of index cards and some thumbtacks to make some impromptu pinhole viewers. My coworker thought of bringing sheets of white paper so we could see if we could witness the shadow bands. That turned out to be a brilliant idea because we also used it to help view the eclipse through the pinhole viewer.

I actually had so much more fun seeing the indirect effects of the eclipse.  It didn’t get really dark here. Probably more like Twilight dark. The street lights turned on and I could see a planet shining like a bright star in the distance. I didn’t notice any other stars (but I was not really looking up either). I became really focused on the white paper and the shadow bands, which we did end up seeing, and which were really awesome! And then it seemed like it all ended really quickly. I felt kind of bad that I didn’t look through the viewer during the time the moon was most blocking the sun, but oh well. I’ll just have to go chase the next total eclipse in a few years. 🙂

It was really fun to get together with a bunch of people in my community and connect over something so awesome and amazing and science-y.

Today I ran a very painful 12 miles. I mentioned earlier this week about an injury. I was very tempted to just skip my run today because, holy fuck, this injury is fucking painful. Basically, my running bra has caused a blister which has caused an abscess.  This exact thing happened last year and it sucked then too. However, last year it happened earlier in my training. This year it’s happening at a key point in my training when I can’t really take much of a break. So I sucked it up and just fucking did that motherfucker. And it fucking hurt. I ran it reeeeallly slow. But ended up, still, in “the plan’s” slower end of the recommended running pace. So there you go.  Tonight I’m eating pizza and drinking beer because I deserve it.
