Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

  • Current Event Wednesday: Snow Emergency!

    January 9, 2008
    Spokane Snowfall

The big news in my world is that we are getting a sh*tload of snow. Seriously. Is it ever going to end?

City of Spokane declares snow emergency
The City of Spokane has declared a “Condition Red” snow emergency, which means crews will be plowing snow 24 hours a day, seven days a week until all streets are cleared. There are 967 miles of streets in Spokane.

A snow emergency is in effect for the City of Spokane.

Right now, 26 plows, three sanders, and six de-icer trucks are out working. Crews are focusing on snow emergency routes and major arterials. Then, they’ll move to the secondary arterials, bus routes, and residential hills.

The city has not declared a snow emergency in two winters.

Sigh. I feel like Sisyphus with all of the shoveling. I shoveled last night and then we got a half a foot of snow this morning! So we shoveled the car out of the driveway and I carved a path on our front walk. I’ll probably have to do it again tomorrow. ugh.

    January 7, 2008

I finished knitting Mr. Greenjeans and it is now blocking. It took me a couple of weeks to knit this. About the same amount of time as any sweater, really. So don’t be deceived by the pattern that says you can make this in a week. It took the same amount of time as any other worsted-weight sweater I’ve ever knitted. I wasn’t super thrilled after I tried it on. The bottom part is ribbed and so doesn’t seem to fit very well on the bottom half of my body. I tried to stretch the hell out of when I blocked it. I hope that helps. There is nothing worse than trying a sweater you have worked on for two weeks (or more) and deciding that you don’t like it. At least in my opinion.

Now I have to decide on a button.

  • Book Talk Saturday

Clubbing by Andi Watson and Josh HowardHave I told you about my newest favoritest graphic novel imprint? Minx! They are a line of graphic novels geared toward girls. And we’re not talking cheesy romance graphic novels, either. We are talking strong, feminine lead characters! My latest read is Clubbing by Andi Watson and Josh Howard. It’s about a spoiled rich girl from London who is sent to the country to live with her grandparents after she is caught, and jailed, for using a fake idea to get into a club. He grandparents own a golf club. One day, while poking around the club with her love interest (okay, maybe there IS SOME romance. I mean, we ARE girls after all. And we do like the romance.), she (and the boy) stumble upon a dead body! The plot thickens and the mystery begins. She is on a search for the killer, but she isn’t prepared for what she finds out…

Good As LilyAnother fabulous recent read was Good As Lily by Derek Kirk Kim and Jesse Hamm. This is the story of a young girl (I can’t remember the protagonist’s name) who, on her birthday, runs into herself at three different stages of her life. She takes “herselves” home with her, sneaking them in without telling her parents. It seems she is stuck with them until they help her come to terms with various issues that she has to face. It’s a really interesting, creative story. Very funny, too.

I could go on and on with these graphic novels. I intend to read them all as they come in. They are simply fantastic. I highly recommend them.

I took this on Sunday our walk. That there behind the tree is a lake completely frozen over and covered with snow.

  • Current Event Wednesday: Iowa

    January 2, 2008
Official presidential portrait of Barack Obama...
    Image via Wikipedia

The big news today are the Iowa caucuses. It doesn’t seem possible that we are here already! 2004 seems like yesterday. Remember Howard Dean? What an exciting and hopeful time that was!

I find this time around to be pretty exciting, too. I really like all of the candidates (of course we’re talking democrats here). I like Obama. I’ve liked him since I first heard him at the ’04 Democratic convention. Edwards is great, too. I’ve heard some really good arguments for an Edwards/Obama run. I like Clinton. But I think she may be too much of a lightening rod. I don’t know.

Lots to think about! The good news is that the current regime is almost over!
