  • Book Review Saturday: Story of a Girl

    November 17, 2007

Story of a GirlStory of a Girl by Sara Zarr was another contender for the National Book Award this year. It’s the story of a girl (heh) who has a past. A girl with a bad past.

At the young age of 13, Deanna is caught by her father having sex in a car with her brother’s best friend. After this event her family life seems to disintegrate. Her father seems to have lost respect for her and becomes distant. This causes Deanna to become depressed. She deeply misses the relationship she had with her dad before the unfortunate event. Two years later Deanna is wiser and hardened. She has become the class “slut” (even though she doesn’t sleep around) and only has two real friends.

She decides she needs to find a job so that she can save money to help her brother, girlfriend, and baby move out of their parent’s basement. Her plan is to move out with them so that she can escape the emotionally oppressive relationship she has with her father. She finds a suitable job at a pizza joint, only to find that she will be working with Tommy, the guy she had sex with. Emotions are stirred, as you can imagine.

I really liked this book. It wasn’t my favorite, but it was good. The writing was very good. The story was interesting. There were not any life-changes at the end, but things were tied up pretty nicely. The character development was excellent. I really felt drawn into Deanna’s thoughts and really felt what she was going through, the unfairness of it all. Her situation and feelings about it are complicated, as it is in life.

  • Where I Find Spirituality

    November 15, 2007

Today I’m am choosing topic #21.

    Where I find spirituality

I have been on a search for spirituality from the time I was a wee child. I’m just that kind of person. I’ve always been interested in things “not of this earth.” I was raised Catholic, and was forced to go to attended church every Sunday. So the idea of God and the afterlife has been ingrained in me from the beginning. I remember being very interested in things like horoscopes and reincarnation. My sister or my mom had a copy of the books, Sun Signs and Love Signs by Linda Goodman and I remember just being fascinated by both of those books.

When I was younger, up until I was in my thirties I would pray. When I was younger it had a “talking to God” kind of quality to it where I would pour out my fears, hopes, and dreams and it would make me feel better.

When I was in my mid twenties I became a born-again Christian, much to my family’s dismay. Again, I was searching for some spirituality and I found myself at “Skate Church” with a friend of mine who was a Christian. They caught me on the right day because I “gave myself to the lord” that night and it was, indeed, a spiritual experience for me. I met my future husband that day, too. I suppose that could be a kind of spiritual experience, as well, because I knew the moment I saw him that I would marry him.

This “born again Christian” phase ended up being an interesting two or three years that culminated in attending a rather crazy Pentecostal church that bordered on cultish. Raf and I had gone down this road together and we got out of it together.

We got married in Reno Nevada at the Starlight Chapel with no pomp and circumstance. Just the two of us and the minister. That was rather spiritual for me, as well. When the minister proclaimed that we were joined as man and wife I felt something happen spiritually between us, like our souls were knitted together. It was kind of strange and fantastic. It makes me teary-eyed thinking about it right now.

These days I don’t go to church. And I don’t even know if I’m a Christian anymore. I might be, I don’t know. I’m still trying to work that out. As I get older and wiser I realize that spirituality is not found in one place, one church or in one “god.” I find spirituality everywhere, in everything. I especially find it in nature. I don’t know how to explain it, but it’s that feeling of peace. That feeling of being right with the world.

  • Current event Wednesday: mmmm. chocolate…

Criminy I’m having a bad day! sigh. I need to think about something nice. Like Chocolate!

Did you know that the South Americans were eating Chocolate more than 3,000 years ago? New research shows that they were:

Residents of Central America were enjoying chocolate drinks more than 3,000 years ago, a half millennium earlier than previously thought, new research shows.

People were drinking chocolate in Central America more than 3,000 years ago, scientists say.

Archaeologists led by John Henderson of Cornell University studied the remains of pottery used in the lower Ulua Valley in northern Honduras about 1100 B.C.

Residue from the pots contained theobromine, which occurs in the cacao plant and is the source of chocolate, the researchers said in Monday’s online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The find dates the first use of chocolate to some 500 years earlier than previously known, they said.

The style of the pottery indicates that cacao was served at important ceremonies to mark weddings and births, according to the authors.

God bless ’em for figuring out how to make chocolate. How did they figure it out? I’ve never had cocoa but my husband said the bean is very bitter (he tried it when he was in Costa Rica). And yet it produces a heavenly delicious product. Yum.

  • The night I injured my knee

    Mosh pit.

The Story of My Most Serious Injury.

I have a couple of stories I could tell. But I think I will tell you about the time I tore the meniscus of my right knee. It’s kind of a good story.

I was out on a first date with a guy who proved to be a horrible boyfriend. This date set off huge red flags. But did I listen? No. But that’s a different story for a different day.

We went to a show at this club in Palo Alto called The Edge (I can’t believe that place is STILL around). We went to a Ska show. I can’t even remember the band right now. There was slam dancing. My date had abandoned me and I was alone on the edge of the mosh-pit. I was bored and maybe a little drunk. Just intoxicated enough to get that “I’m invincible” feeling. You know that feeling. So I decided that I was going to slam dance. It was fun for the tiniest bit of time. But then some idiot decided to slam into me with his full force. The next thing I remember I was on the ground and a very nice guy helped me up and led me to some chairs. He stayed with me for awhile to make sure I was okay (what a nice guy!). He helped me to a bouncer who had first aide training. I think I may have been going into shock. I was in lots of pain. I couldn’t walk by myself. I was looking through a yellow filter and I could hear the lights. Apparently my knee had popped out of joint and I tore the meniscus tissue. I was in a club with loud music, cigarette smoke and a bunch of drunk people. And where was my date?!? Eventually he found me. I don’t remember if we went right home or not. I think we stayed for some more of the concert. I know he didn’t take very much pity on me. I remember the ride home from the show thinking that this was a test, and this guy failed it miserably. I told myself I would never see him again. This was the red flag to end all red flags. I was reading the signs loud and clear.

For reasons I don’t understand now, I ended up dating him for a few months. And it proved to be one of the worst relationships I ever was in. Big surprise, eh?
