Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

  • Fairest

FairestI know I’ve been posting a lot of book reviews lately. I hope you don’t mind. But there is really a lot of fantastic Y.A. and Juvenile fiction out there and I’ve really been enjoying reading it! Fairest, by Gail Carson Levine has to be one of my favorites. It takes place in the world of Ella Enchanted (also by Levine and another fantastic book.). It is about a girl named Aza, a girl who was brought up by a family of inkeepers. She is a self-described oaf. And others, unfortunately, think of her the same way. After years of hearing others make fun of her looks she thinks herself ugly, too. She would like nothing more than to be beautiful. However, she does have a gift. She has a tremendously beautiful voice and in her kingdom this is very important. Singing is a vital part of the culture. She also can Illuse. That is, she can throw her voice and make it “come out of” different objects, and even make it sound like other people. This little gift gets her an invitation to the Royal Wedding, where she meets the Queen and becomes her lady-in-waiting. As the Lady-in-waiting Aza discovers the Queen’s magic mirror that can make her look beautiful. She, then, discovers the Queen’s secret beauty potion and drinks some. She then becomes “fairest in the land” which leads to disasterous results.

While she is living in the castle the young prince falls in love with her. But he falls in love with the “ugly” Aza. Not the beautiful Aza. This helps Aza to realize that she is beautiful without a potion, and she begins to accept her looks.

I loved this book. Absolutely loved it. It was one of those books that I couldn’t put down. I loved the message. And I think it’s a message that many young girls need to get these days, so you can bet I will be recommending this one to lots of kids. It was also very funny. Just an all around fun story.

  • Look what I found at my mom’s house

    March 25, 2007

It’s my old copy of “Thriller!”

Look what I found at my Mom's house!

Dude. I am sooo glad I didn’t sell this during my “born-again-Christian” phase.

Remember when he looked like a normal human? He looked good! Why did he have to go and screw it up?

And, man! This is a GOOD album! Seriously! I’m listening to it right now and it kicks ass. It’s bringing back all kinds of memories.

My husband are reminiscing right now about how we used to roller skate to these songs at our respective roller rinks. Mine was somewhere in the Spokane Valley. His was somewhere in San Jose, CA.

  • Thoughts on the Edwardses

There is all of this talk about whether or not they are making the right decision. My thoughts? It’s none of our business. They know what they can handle. It’s thier decision. Not ours.

What is it with the media and the pundits? Why do they think they can make these judgements for people? It’s annoying.

Here is a quote from a New York Times article on the subject:

Janet Leff, 65, a breast cancer survivor whose cancer had also spread to her bones, said all the talk about what the Edwardses should or should not do is misguided. It is nobody’s business but theirs, she said.

When her cancer was diagnosed five years ago, she was volunteering as a social worker in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Family members urged her to come home, give up the hard life in a war-ravaged country. She ignored them, she said, and she thinks that is partly why she is still alive.

As far as my take on the actual decision (which is really none of my business anyway), I think that it’s very courageous. I only hope that, if I am ever in that situation, that I would have the will and motivation to keep going and doing the things that I’ve planned on doing. I wouldn’t want to cower in a corner, either. I would want to go out there and live.
