You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

  • RIP Kurt Vonnegut

    April 13, 2007

note: again. It has taken me TWO DAYS to write this post. sigh.
Breakfast of ChampionsAs everyone in the world has already heard, Kurt Vonnegut has died. I feel sad at the news. Vonnegut was a literary hero for me. In fact, reading “Breakfast of Champions” is what, essentially, made me want to be a lit major. “Breakfast of Champions” was the book in which I realized, in a bonafide a-ha experience, that the narrator of the book is a character. That you can’t always believe or trust the narrator’s point of view. It was like a brick hit me in the head when I realized that and suddenly reading became even more interesting to me.

Here is an awesome librarian-related quote that I found a couple of years ago:

“I want to congratulate librarians, not famous for their physical strength or their powerful political connections or their great wealth, who, all over this country, have staunchly resisted anti-democratic bullies who have tried to remove certain books from their shelves, and have refused to reveal to thought police the names of persons who have checked out those titles.

So the America I loved still exists, if not in the White House or the Supreme Court or the Senate or the House of Representatives or the media. The America I love still exists at the front desks of our public libraries.” – Kurt Vonnegut

    I’m all teary-eyed right now.

Rest in peace, Mr. Vonnegut. You will be sorely missed.

  • And people still think global warming isn’t real

    April 10, 2007
Mean surface temperature change for the period...
    Image via Wikipedia

note: I started writing this last week! sigh. I’ve been a busy girl.

I am astounded at the people who think global warming isn’t a threat with all of the evidence all over the place saying that it is. The lastest being a report published by United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

“The whole of climate change is something actually here and now rather than something for the future,” said Neil Adger, a British lead author of the report.

I really just don’t understand how people can be so blind. How can they not see that this is a real threat right now? It is a real and serious threat and our country needs to do our part to reduce our emissions. And people need to come to grips with the fact that it is real. It is not a political ploy made up by Al Gore. It is not something that should be dividing our country. People need to wake the hell up. Turn off Fox News and back slowly away from the television.

Somebody that I know was raked through the coals for making a little comment about global warming. It was an innocent comment. Almost a joke. Someone made some comment about the weather and the comment, “maybe it’s global warming” was stated in response. A person sitting in the room (it was a staff lounge. Not were I work, btw. I work with really normal people, thank god) totally ripped into this person that I know (the one who made the “global warming” comment). She stated that it isn’t real, it’s just a myth, blah blah blah blah blah. I think we all know the talking points. I guess this person was even getting angry, trying to defend her idiotic position. And in the end, that’s what she looked like. An idiot. A raving lunatic.

    Credit cards
    Image via Wikipedia

I’m depressed. I just did my taxes and I owe this year. I own a shitload. I have no idea how I’m going to pay it by April 17th. I suppose I will have to resort to using my credit card but I hate it. I’ve been working my ass off, trying to pay my credit cards down. And now I will have to take a huge step back.

I’ve never had to owe money before. This totally sucks. I wonder if I can blame this on the Bush Administration? sigh. I am so sick of being broke.

I’m going to go crawl into my hole now and lay in the fetal position for awhile.

  • Kind of made me smile

    March 30, 2007
    Low energy lightbulbs.
    Image via Wikipedia

After work I made my (almost) daily visit to the grocery store to grab some things for dinner. My plan was to also pick up a couple of fluorescent lightbulbs. Regular lightbulbs will not suffice. I am going to replace them all, eventually, with the fuorescent ones. They are much more energy efficient. Which means, for me, less times that I have to change lightbulbs.

So I go to the “electric stuff” aisle and guess what? My Rosauers is clean out of them. Completely. And the regular bulbs are just sitting on the shelves, gathering dust. I kind of stood there for a second and smiled. Maybe Spokane is “getting” it. Or at least a few people, anyway.

  • Google Themes

    March 29, 2007

About a week (or so) ago I noticed that on my Google Hompage I could select a theme. Hmm. New feature. Thought I would try it out. It turns out it’s very cool and I’m totally obsessed with it. When you choose a theme you type in your zip code and the theme changes depending on either the weather conditions or the time of day. I chose the “tea house” theme and this is what it looks like right now, at 7:00 Pacific time:

How cute is that? Last night the little guy was asleep out on his porch and he had some oranges out on a plate. This morning he was still asleep but the oranges were gone! Apparently, hidden in some of the themes, there is an Easter Egg that happens exactly at 3:15 A.M. In the Tea House theme there are little creatures that come and take the oranges.

    So cute.

    I’m easily amused.

Read more about Google Themes here. And here.
