Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

Frank tagged me with a meme! I don’t think I’m going to top his five things (his eye popped out of his head when he was a kid!!). But I will try.

    1. I like to watch my clothes wash while I’m doing my laundry. Am I crazy? Am I the only one who does this? When I wash clothes I will sit and watch the clothes agitate and become hypnotized by it until several minutes pass. I know. It’s kind of strange.
    2. Following the “bad experiences in childhood” theme that Frank started with the “eye popping out of the head” story, I did an awful thing to my brother when I was little and I still feel bad about it. My brother is a year younger than me and when we were kids we were practically joined at the hip. We had lots of fun playing together, but, boy, did we fight. One day when I was about 4 years old I remember being so mad at him that I grabbed a spaghetti sauce jar full of rocks from Cannon Beach and broke it over his back. It shattered into a million pieces. My brother started crying, as you can imagine because the pain must have been awful. I felt so bad about it that I cried just as hard as he did. Plus I was kind of freaked out that the jar shattered. I don’t know what I expected to happen, but it was shocking, nonetheless.
    3. Following the “bad experience” theme, I became afraid of heights because of an experience at the World’s Fair in 1974, here in Spokane. I was 5 years old and I was on some kind ride that went over the downtown area, so that one could get a bird’s eye view of the fair. I was on the ride with my Dad and I remember him kind of freaking out a little bit. I don’t know if I was belted in tight enough but I think he was afraid I was going to fall out. By the end of the ride I was petrified.
    4. I get really weak at the sight of blood, or anything like that. Walking into a hospital will almost make me pass out. I don’t know what it is about it but it makes me physically ill.
    5. I have never had to have surgery for anything.

    Okay. Who to tag?
    How about:
    Jennifer
    Christie
    Amanda
    Andrea
    Cathi

  • A hat, an ale, and a record album

    December 21, 2006

12-21-hat-topThis is what I finished for myself yesterday. I wanted a hat to match my favorite scarf.

Pattern: The Asymmetrical cable hat from the book One Skein by Leigh Radford.
Yarn: Steadfast fibers Wonderful Wool in the colorway Columbine (1 hank). 1 ball of a mystery mohair yarn, and one ball of Bollicine in color 550 (light purple).
    Needles: size 11 Denise.
    Started: December 17th 2006
    Finished: December 20th, 2006

For some reason I felt compelled to make a hat with a pompom. I like it. I hated making the pompom, though. And I’m afraid it’s going to disintegrate into little pieces of cutted up yarn.

This is what I’m drinking right now:
    12-21-stpeters

St. Peter’s Cream Stout. I’ve never had it before. Actually I had never heard of it before. But I felt like a good beer and saw this cool looking bottle in the “fancy beer” section of the store and decided I needed to try it. It’s pretty effing good. It’s the kind of beer that, when you take the first drink you kind of go, “huh.” Makes you think a bit. Kinda complex. Then as you drink more of it it tastes better and better.

This is what I’m listening to right now:

    On this:

Which reminds me. I need to tell you about my killer record player. I have a record player! It’s so cool! I still have an old U2 album that I listented to when I was in High School and it’s in great condition.

  • another note to Spokane drivers

    December 20, 2006
    Tehran street crossing
    Image via Wikipedia

First of all, you need to know that the law states that you HAVE to stop for a pedestrian when they are crossing the road at an intersection. It doesn’t matter if there is a crosswalk painted on the road. If there is an intersection and a person is crossing the road, you stop for them (duh).

That said, when you have done your job as a driver and have stopped to allow the pedestrian to cross the road and the person crosses and everything is fine and dandy, don’t yell out the window, “Thank You,” Implying that the pedestrian was being impolite. What is that all about? Are you that egocentric? Why do you expect to be thanked for doing you lawful duty? Why not just allow the pedestrian to cross the road and then move on your merry way? Why piss off the poor pedestrian who is merely trying to make her way to work without getting killed by one of you?

In short, just do your effing job and move on. Don’t expect to be thanked for driving like a normal person.

    That is all.

  • A post about nothing

    December 20, 2006

    Cover via Amazon

I feel compelled to post. But I really don’t have anything witty, snarky, or brilliant to say. I just feel compelled to post. Maybe it is just to say hello.

I cleaned out my desk yesterday.

Let me back up a bit by saying that my husband and I are going through an “organizing” phase. We have come to the realization that we are, slobs, ahem, not very organized. And we should be. We are librarians, dammit. So we have been checking out dorky “how to organize” videotapes from the library and learning a thing or two. We started with his office a couple of weeks ago. And, I am proud to say, it looks good. The books are even sorted by genre. You know you’re impressed with that.

So the next thing on my list was my desk. It’s has become a black hole. For several years I have shoved things in there. Things that I don’t want to deal with at the moment. I took everything out of it and put my things into categories. Some of the stuff I threw away. I don’t think I need the reciept for the pair of Gap Jeans I bought five years ago anymore.

But I did find some treasures. I found an old poem scratched out on a pad of paper that I almost threw away. The poem was entitled “Silicon Valley” and is about living in the Bay Area and having to struggle there while others were becoming rich. I found some old Moleskine Diary entries, torn out of an old mini Moleskine that I gave to my husband. They took me back in time a few years when I was unhappily working in a job that I hated. And then I found a stack of papers from when I was in college. One of the papers was written when I was in my “The Films of John Carpenter” class. It is a decontruction of the film, “Big Trouble in Little China.” Some other papers were from a class called, “Literature of the Asian Diaspora” (or something like that). The professor had an interesting idea. Each week we were to write a page and a half on a topic that related to the weekly novel we were supposed to read. And then we were to write a page and a half on our reaction to the novel. Then we were partnered up and our partner would read our paper and comment on it. Then our partner would turn it in to our professor. It was all very casual. I don’t think she even graded these mini papers. It was really for our own benefit. Of course at the time I was probably freaked out about getting the thing done. But as I read through these pages I could see that I was working something out through the writing. It was helping me to understand who I was and where I came from. It was interesting to read who I was seven years ago compared to who I am today.

Maybe that is what I am trying to do with this post, too. I feel compelled to write. Maybe I am trying to work something out.
