Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. December 10, 2006

    Another Christmas present done! Yay!
Pattern: The Rib and Cable Gaiter on page 37 of the book One Skein.
Yarn: Some that I had in my stash. It’s some leftover Cascade Eco Wool. A fraction of a hank.
Needles: Size 6 16″ circular bamboo by Clover.
    Started: November 20 something.
    Finished: December 9

First of all, I have to say that Cascade Eco Wool kicks ass. I mean, that is some serious yardage right there. I bought the hank a couple of years ago to make a scarf for my husband’s grandfather. So I made a whole scarf + this gaiter out of it. AND I think I will have enough of this left over to make my dad some matching Convertable Mittens. And I think I only paid, like, $13.00 for the one hank. Not a bad deal.

So after I am done with the mittens (which I started today) I will be done with my Christmas knitting. I am kind of proud of myself this year. I escaped the out-of-control consumerism that is Christmas. All of my gifts to everyone this year are handmade. Whether they will like them is a whole other story.

  • Friday Random 10. Movie Soundtrack Edition.

    December 8, 2006

Is it friday already? I’ve got my glass of wine in hand. Let’s do this.

    1. Forever Yellow Skies. The Cranberries. To the faithful departed.
      To the Faithful Departed
Why am I slightly embarrased that I have The Cranberries on my iPod? I do actually like them. I haven’t heard this song in awhile.
    2. Story of a lonely guy. Blink-182. Take off your pants and jacket.
Take off Your Pants and Jacket
      I really like Blink-182. I don’t know why. It’s adolecent music. But I can’t help it.
    3. Smells Like Teen Spirit. Nirvana. Nevermind.
      Nevermind
May Kurt Cobain be resting in peace.
    4. Stand. Blues Traveler. Four.
      Four
Never really a huge fan of Blues Traveler. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to this album the whole way through.
    5. I don’t know you. Annie Ross and the low note quintet. Short Cuts Soundtrack.
      Short Cuts
Have you seen the movie, Short Cuts? It’s one of my favorite movies. Directed by Robert Altman. R.I.P. Mr. Altman.
    6. In Tennessee. The George W. Bush Singers. Songs in the key of W.
Songs in the Key of W
Thank you George W. Bush Singers! I needed a good chuckle.
    7. Two Swords. The English Beat. I just can’t stop it.
      I Just Can\'t Stop It
Why do I always get some English Beat song when I do one of these FR10s? I only have this one album from them. My iPod must like them
    8. Constant Sorrow. Soggy Bottom Boys. O Brother where art thou.
      O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Another one of my favorite movies.
    9. Oh good grief. Vince Guaraldi trio. A boy named Charlie Brown.
A Boy Named Charlie Brown: The Original Sound Track Recording Of The CBS Television Special
    10. Rush. Big Audio Dynamite II (?). So I married an Axe Murderer Sountrack.
So I Married An Axe Murderer: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
      There was a B.A.D. II?

Thanks for all of your comments on the “WTF” post. A few days later I’m feeling less shock and more depressed. Hopefully this cloud will lift soon.

So why am I so bothered by the James Kim death? I think it’s because I feel like it could have happened to me. It seems so random. A family takes what they think looks like a shortcut on a map because they missed thier exit. How many times has that happened to you or me? It happened to my husband and I last summer in Oregon, in fact. We were driving to the coast. The road we ended up on was an obscure road that wound through the Oregon mountains. It was a gorgeous drive last summer and we didn’t feel the slightest bit afraid that we would get lost. But that road in the winter would probably be impassable.

I just keep thinking about what the family must have been going through in the car the 9 days they were stuck there. And then to make the decision for James to go get help. He was very heroic to make that decision. He must have known the risks. He left the car in street clothes. He probably didn’t make it through the night. And then the fact that he was found a half a mile from his car. And I also found out that he was very close to a fishing lodge, too. It’s just tragic. And I feel bad about it.

  • WTF?

    December 6, 2006

This has been one strange day. One strange awful day. Here is how the things unfolded:

    1. First, as I’m taking the bus from the Downtown library to the South Hill library (I had a meeting this morning) I notice that there are a lot of kids mulling around the a high school that the bus passes. The bus is diverted to another route because police are blocking off the regular route. Clearly something was happening at the high school. I found out that a “pipe bomb” was found in the boys bathroom and they evacuated the school. It turns out it was just an abandoned science project. whew!
    2. Then, I get to work to check the news and found out that they found the body of James Kim in the Oregon wilderness. This makes me sad. I was hoping that they would find him alive.
    3. About 10 minutes later I found out that a friend’s mom died this morning. I feel awful for my friend 😦
    4. Then my mom sent me an e-mail telling me that she had an awful day today. She found out that a friend of hers has cancer.
    5. She also told me that a teacher she knows of in the school disctrit was murdered this morning in a double homicide!
    6. Then she also told me that my step-dad found out yesterday that a friend of his was found dead when nobody had heard from him for a few days.
    7. I forgot to mention when I first posted this. At the end of the day a co-worker came up to me and said that another co-worker called into work saying she couldn’t come in because thier was a death in the family.
    8. This same co-worker’s uncle died a within the past few days.

    WTF? What a horrible day!

    Totally heartbreaking.

The body of a San Francisco man who had walked into the Oregon wilderness to summon help for his stranded family was found Wednesday in a steep ravine where he had left clues for searchers.

Officials confirmed that James Kim, 35, an editor at the Web site CNET, had been found dead.

A very sad end to this story. Again, my thoughts and prayers are with his family. I wish this had a happier ending.
