  • Friday Random 10

    November 17, 2006

It’s Friday! Time for another FR10!

If you want to play along put your mp3 player on random and blog the first 10 songs.

    1. Rhythms. Sum 41. All Killer No Filler.
      All Killer No Filler
I like this album. It reminds me of living in Santa Cruz.

    2. Sometimes you gotta make it alone. Money Mark. Napoleon Dynamite Soundtrack.
      Napoleon Dynamite
I really do not like this song. In fact I think I hate it.
    3. Lovers who uncover. The Little Ones. Sing Song EP.
      Sing Song
This song, on the other hand, I love. I downloaded it from iTunes last summer on a whim. I was looking for some new, summery music from a band I’d never heard of. This song now reminds me of camping at Skookum lake, the beautiful shores of Cape Horn on the Oregon Coast, and hiking through Cape Dissappointment. Great Song. Puts a smile on my face.
    4. Big Shot. English Beat. I just can’t stop it
      I Just Can\'t Stop It
This song bores me at the moment. I want to go back to last summer!
    5. Play for Today. The Cure. Staring at the Sea.
Staring at the Sea: The Singles
God I love the Cure. They are so damn dramatic. How can you not love them?
    6. If the kids are united. Sham 69. No Thanks! The 70’s Punk Rebellion.
No Thanks! The \'70s Punk Rebellion
“If the kids are united, then we’ll never be divided.” Good ‘ol fashioned punk. Fuck yeah.
    7. The Difference. The Wallflowers. Bringing down the horse.
      Wallflowers: Bringing Down the Horse
Wow. what the hell happened to these guys? ARe they still around? This was a pretty good album. I really liked it when it came out foreverago.
    8. Positively 4th street. Bob (fucking) Dylan. Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits.
      Bob Dylan\'s Greatest Hits
NO FUCKING WAY. A Bob Dylan song comes up right after a song from his son. I’m totally freaking out right now. When the Wallflowers song was playing I had an image in my head of Bob Dylan and his son, Whathisname Dylan from the Wallflowers on stage together at the Grammys several years ago.
    9. Mr. Big. The Dils. No Thanks! The 70s Punk Rebellion.
No Thanks! The \'70s Punk Rebellion
      Gotta love the punk.
    10. Revolve. Nine Days. The Maddening Crowd.
      The Madding Crowd
This album is quite a few years old, but this song sounds like all of that sappy emo band music that is popular now. Slighty edgier, though.

  • Gonzaga Prep grad wins National Book Award!

    November 16, 2006

The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust BowlI’m so proud of my town right now! A Spokanite won the National Book Award for Non-fiction! Check it out:

Timothy Egan, a 1973 Gonzaga Prep grad, won the National Book Award for nonfiction Wednesday night for “The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl.”

“I feel like I just ran a sub-four-minute-mile,” said a giddy Egan, clutching his trophy while photographers gathered around him at the New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square. “The endorphins are kicking in.”

After Egan’s name was announced, the potential still existed for a Spokane-connected double win. Spokane’s Jess Walter was one of five finalists in the fiction category for his novel, “The Zero.” But when the fiction choice was announced a few minutes later, the winner was Richard Powers for “The Echo Maker.” Walter showed zero trace of disappointment.

The Zero: A NovelNow, I knew that Jess Walter was from Spokane. In fact, he still lives here. But I am just finding out today that Egan is from Spokane, too. This is such great news for our city. We have been kind of getting bad press for a number of things, namely the whole Mayor scandal (did you see Frontline the other night?). So it’s great to see some good news attached to our humble little city.

I guess I should actually read both of these books…They both look fabulous! I AM currently reading a Jess Walter book at the moment, “Land of the Blind.” I will let you know how I like it. so far it’s a really good read.

  • Stunning

    November 15, 2006
Cover of If I Did It Confessions of the Killer

Remember that wife-killer-who-got-away-with-it O.J. Simpson? He’s going to write a book. About how he would have committed the murders if he, indeed, did them.

In a stunning announcement, FOX TV says it plans to interview the 59-year-old former football star and actor about “how he would have committed” the slayings of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman, for which he was acquitted in a criminal trial. (In a 1997 civil case, Simpson was found liable for the two deaths.)

The two-part, “unrestricted” interview, to be conducted by book publisher Judith Regan and called O.J. Simpson: If I Did It, Here’s How It Happened, will air Nov. 27 and Nov. 29, says FOX, the Associated Press reports.

    Yikes!

  • Haunted Hikes

    November 14, 2006

Haunted Hikes: Spine-Tingling Tales and Trails from North America\'s National ParksI picked up this book, Haunted Hikes written by Andrea Lankford on Saturday and have really been enjoying it all weekend! It features hikes in the United States that are known to be haunted. She tells the ghost story surrounding the park and hike and then provides a trail map for each one. Fun! And it’s scaring the hell out of me, too. I made the mistake of reading it a bit before going to sleep Saturday night.

I have my own little hiking ghost story.

Raf and I used to live at Family Student Housing while I was going to school at UCSC. Across the street from the university there was this beautiful hiking area. I believe the land was owned by the University. It wasn’t an official park or anything, but people go in there and hike around in the forest. It was a beautiful place and I miss hiking there. I can’t even find the words to describe it.

Anyway, one day we were hiking and we hit a trailhead that went off to the left, on top of a ridge. We usually just went straight, but Raf said, “Lets try out this trail today.” And I said, “Okay.” So away we went. As we hiked along on this ridge I started to feel strange. The farther we went I really started to feel very afraid. It got to the point where I actually had to stop and tell Raf that we needed to turn around because I was getting really scared. We did and practically ran to the place where we were more familiar. I don’t know what it was about that hike, but something was really freaking me out, big time.

When we got home Raf admited that when he took that hike alone the day before he had the same strange feeling! And he couldn’t explain it. So he decided to take me on the hike that day and not tell me his experience to see what my reaction would be.

What the hell happened there?!? It had some BAD vibes.

One thing to note is that UC Santa Cruz had a serial killer. (and at the time there were several horrible killers.. Scary). It freaks me out to think what could have happened there. After reading more about it for this blog entry (click at our own risk), it really is very fucking disturbing.
