The Amber Spyglass (His Dark Materials, Book 3)I just finished “The Amber Spyglass” today during my lunch break. sigh. I love the “His Dark Materials” trilogy and am sorry that I’m finished reading it. Listening to it was such a wonderful experience. It was narrated by Pullman himself, with help from a huge cast of characters. I highly recommeded the audiobook. I downloaded mine from Audible.com.

  • The Harriet and George Show

Want a little bit of a laugh (or a gag, depending)? read the Harriet and George letters at The Smoking Gun. I could only get through about 6 of them before I had to look away. ugh! Talk about major ass-kissing. Thanks Dianne!

My hubby also sent me this link today, with the comment, “Harriet Myers is a freaking Evangelical Christian!”

I am upset about her being an evangelical christian, too. why? because I used to be one and I know the extent to which they wear thier religion on thier sleeve. I don’t mind somebody being a Christian. I mean, I still am one, I guess. (although I’ve kind of grown weary of the Focus on the Family, neo-christian types). But I am really against those who think everyone needs to believe what they believe. And that is the nature of the Evangelical Christian belief. They have been called to enthusiastically and ardently spread the Word of God. So, it kind of bothers me that we could have somebody on the Supreme Court who is also an evagelical Christian. It just seems to me that her beliefs could get in the way of making rational descisions.

oh, and my hubby also sent me this interesting link, too.

So, to put this in context, Bush is doing a “heck of a job” which translates to “complete and utter failure.” Why? because that is how Bush described the job of Micheal D. Brown, “Brownie, your doing a heck of a job!”.

    Isn’t American English interesting?

  • Jaguar

    October 9, 2005

    Jaguar
We had the Author Roland Smith speak at the library yesterday. Since I was supposed to be the hostess for the program I thought I should read at leas one of his books before I met him. So I went to the YA shelves and picked Jaguar. I was pleasantly suprised. It was a good read! Very action packed.

It’s about this boy whose father is a research biologist. He goes to visit his father on location in Brazil, and his trip takes a horrible turn when his dad’s boat blows up, killing his dad’s partner and friend.

The author event went very well. Roland Smith’s talk was very interesting. He talked about his writing process and the things that have inspired his books. He is also a research biologist and has been involved in many interesting projects including the reintroduciton of wolves into Yellowstone National Forest.

  • snake vs. alligator

    Alligator

BBC NEWS | Americas | Snake bursts after gobbling gator

An unusual clash between a 6-foot (1.8m) alligator and a 13-foot (3.9m) python has left two of the deadliest predators dead in Florida’s swamps.

I have no idea why I’m posting this…I guess I find it rather interesting. Rather horrifying, but also interesting.

This reminds me of some show I watched once (I think it was something like “when pets attack” or “when animals attack” or something like that). The segment was about an old woman who had called 911 because the neighboor’s cobra, that she was babysitting, was swallowing her little toy poodle whole and she didn’t know what to do! She even took pictures. So the 911 call, on the show, was accompanied by these awful pictures of this poor little doggie being eaten by a cobra. Truly, it was so awful that to this day I am still kind of messed up from watching it. There is something just so terrible about a cobra swallowing thier prey live. And to have it be a poor old woman’s little dog right in front of her.

Yeah, I would say that Cobras are not the best pets. And you definately don’t want them around small children or animals.

  • vegetarianism revisited

    October 5, 2005
Menu of Dick's Hamburgers at Spokane, WA
    Image via Wikipedia

This post at the Tattered Coat is very thought provoking. Stomach-churning, yes, but also very thought provoking. Especially for me as I’ve been contemplating going vegetarian lately. Again.

Since I’ve moved back to Spokane I’ve fallen into the clutches of The Belly Buster, a Zip’s Hamburger classic. I was able to cut myself off from fast food for, what was it? 10 years? And now that I’ve moved close to Zips I’ve caved. Fallen off the wagon. But how could I not? Zip’s Belly Busters inlude the artery clogging combination of a meat patty, cheese, ham, bacon, and your standard hamburger condiments like lettuce, tomato, mayo. And this delicious burger is followed by thier delectible fries dipped in Tartar sauce. Yes, in Spokane we dip our fries in tartar sauce. yummy!

But, unfortunately, I am not 20-something anymore and cannot eat Belly Busters to my heart’s content like the good old days. sigh. I’ve probably gained at least five pounds since I’ve moved here. I’m afraid to even step on the scale.

Sooo, this leads me to my desire lately to change my ways. I’ve been considering vegetarianism again, and I’m also considering taking up Yoga, too. I feel like my whole psyche just needs a change.

Not saying I’m going to take the plunge, but it’s posts like this one from Tattered Coat that make me consider it.
