    August 1, 2005

Yesterday Raf and I went for a walk around campus at UCSC, my alma mater. We tried all of our favorite local hiking spots but they were insanely crowded. I’m glad that we ended up here instead. It was fun to walk around campus and reminisce about the days when I went to school here. Raf and I lived on campus at Family Student Housing. Our apartment was incredible! We had the top two floors of a three story, townhouse-like building. The top floor was the living room and kitchen and we had the most gorgeous view of Monterey Bay. It was awesome. I also thought about all of the walking I had to do on that campus. Everything is spread out and it’s quite the hike to get from building to building.

So as we were doing all of this I had this really strong feeling that we were going to be back here, living on campus or something. It was kind of weird. Every once in awhile I get these feelings like that, and then later they come true. I remember years and years ago, before Raf and I were married, and we were living in San Jose and Menlo Park, we were enjoying a bonfire on Seabright Beach (the beach down the street from where we live now) with some friends of ours. We decided to walk up to Days Market to get something to drink and as I was walking through the neighboorhood I had the same strong feeling that I would live in this neighboorhood sometime in the future. Sure enough, several years later, we ended up living here. And I didn’t go out to try and find a place here, either. It just kind of happened.

But I digress. As Raf and I were walking around this amphitheater that you see in the picture, Raf said to me, “I don’t feel like this is the last time we are going to be here.” And so I told him what I had been thinking, too. And it was all very strange and cool :). Who knows what the future holds for us.

    Automated Retrieval System

    July 30, 2005

I tried to get some pictures yesterday and I did a great job of getting pictures of people who were around the library yesterday. I also wanted to get a picture of the SCU Library’s new Automated Retrieval System. An ARS is a large building in which books are stored. There are no stories. The books are stored in bins and they are stacked on top of each other on shelves. Automatic cranes retrieve books as they are called in the library catalog.

I hadn’t seen this in action yet, so I went back there this week to see how it works. It’s actually quite amazing. The cranes zip through really quickly and grab the bin from it’s place, zoom it to the front, and then a student assistant picks the desired book from the bin. It all only takes about 30 seconds.

An interesting thing about it is that there is no rhyme or reason to the order in which the books are placed in the bins, as long as the computer knows where it is so that it can be retrieved. This got me to thinking about the usefulness of Call Numbers in the future. If things move toward this kind of retrieval system, Call Numbers, I believe, could be a thing of the past. They could serve a purpose, I supposed, as a browsing tool in the library catalog. But it’s kind of a clunky way of browsing books.

It’s kind of sad in a way. There is a lot of serendipity that goes on when one is browsing the books stacks. Books tend to jump out at you in ways that are not possible when you merely search the computer.

But at the same time, the new technology is very exciting and interesting.

Weird. I was going to blog about my last day at work but I went on about the ARS instead. Oh well. I’ll tell you about my day tommorrow.

  • FR10 – last day at work edition

    July 29, 2005
    Count Basie
    Image via Wikipedia

So sad! My last day at work. πŸ˜₯

you know how it works. put your mp3 player on random and let her go. Post the first 10 songs that play.

    1. 1 o’clock jump. Count Basie. Swing Back with Count Basie.
Good way to start this off. Count Basie always makes me smile. Love that trumpet!
    2. I want to be the man to warm your mother’s heart. White Stripes. Elephant.
    3. Hostias. Berlin Radio Symphony.Mozart’s Requiem.
    4. Wrong Side. French Kicks. One Time Bells.
    5. Why cant he be you? Patsy Cline. Patsy Cline Story.
    6. Cleanin out my closet. Eminem. The Eminem Show.
    7. Eight Miles High. The Byrds. 20 essential tracks from the Byrds.
    8. Don’t Fear the Reaper. Blue Oyster Cult. Agents of Fortune.
Okay. This puts a smile on my face. I can’t listen to this without thinking about that SnL skit in which Will Farell is the cowbell player for Blue Oyster Cult and they are laying down the track for this song. They really do have a cowbell playing in the background of this song. “You know what this song needs? More cowbell.” Gotta love it πŸ˜†
    9. Bush as Dictator. The department of Homboy Security. The presidential remix.
I can’t even remember where I got this song. It’s about 45 seconds long and it is just bush saying that infamous quote, “”If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier – just so long I’m the dictator.” (you can see the video of him saying it here) It’s just DJified. I don’t know what it is about people putting Bushisms to music but I kind of find it amusing.
    10. Lies. Violent Femmes. Add it Up.
Oh. my. god. How apt is it that this song comes up directly after the previous one?

Alright. I have to bitch about something here. And this is totally unrelated to my friday random 10. Well, except that it falls in line with it being my last day at work.

I just got my last paycheck, and they included the cash amount of my vacation leave in with it. I had about 125 hours of vacation leave saved up that I didn’t take, so I had quite a bit of extra money coming to me. Like I said, I got my check and they took out a LOT of money out for taxes. Basically, they took out the amount of money I take home in a paycheck! It kind of pisses me off because I was planning on living on this money until I get my first paycheck from my new job. I knew that they were going to take out a lot of money for taxes but this is way more than I thought it would be. Kind of puts a dark cloud over my day…Can I blame Bush’s tax cuts for the rich on this? πŸ˜‰

  • Heard back from Boxer, too!

    July 21, 2005

Here’s a snippet from her email response (I hope it’s okay to post these):

There has never been a more important
time for U.S. intelligence agents to be able to
do their work unimpeded; the threats posed by
terrorists are simply too great. Our national
security requires that we protect the identity
of undercover agents, and that sacred
responsibility clearly is more important than
    personal relationships or political posturing.

She also outline what she has been doing regarding this, which has been reported in the news. That is, sending a letter to Bush, along with her colleagues in the Senate, asking for Rove’s resignation.

I’m glad they got back to me. That makes me feel better.
