Generally, it’s China and Zimbabwe that are throwing journalists in prison, while the U.S. denounces the repression over there.

But now similar abuses are about to unfold within the United States, part of an alarming new pattern of assault on American freedom of the press. In the last few months, three different U.S. federal judges, each appointed by President Ronald Reagan, have found a total of eight journalists in contempt of court for refusing to reveal confidential sources, and the first of them may go to prison before the year is out. Some of the rest may be in prison by spring.

This is not good. This is not good at all. Damn it! I wish the American people would wake up out of thier fog!

  • ‘Fired Up’ Kerry Returning to Senate

    t r u t h o u t – ‘Fired Up’ Kerry Returning to Senate

Democrat John F. Kerry plans to use his Senate seat and long lists of supporters to remain a major voice in American politics despite losing the presidential race last Tuesday, and he is assessing the feasibility of trying again in 2008, friends and aides said yesterday.

I’ll vote for him again. At first I wasn’t very excited about Kerry, but I grew to really respect the man. His views are my views. I honestly think he would make an excellent president, and, looking around, I can’t see anyone better for the job. Everyone is throwing around Barack Obama’s name. I think he would be great, but not in 2008. Give him a few more years experience in the Senate, or make him a running mate to Kerry in ’08. I honestly hope Kerry goes for it. The fact that he is picking himself back up and going back to the Senate to fight harder makes me like him even more.

  • Ashcroft, Evans Resign From Bush Cabinet

Yahoo! News – Ashcroft, Evans Resign From Bush Cabinet

Attorney General John Ashcroft a favorite of conservatives, and Commerce Secretary Don Evans, one of President Bush closest friends, resigned Tuesday, the first members of the Cabinet to leave as Bush heads from re-election into his second term.

All I can say is: “WOO HOO!!!” This is a good day for libraries. Now we just need to amend the Pat act.

Although, I’m not so sure about this:
“The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved.”

Okay….Clearly he is living in an alternate reality.

According to the Gaurdian UK, He is.

  • Food for thought

    November 8, 2004

I’ve been doing my usual blog surfing today (and in the process, avoiding work) and came upon some websites that have brought back that old sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. The one that started at about 3am on Wednesday morning, and slightly subsided over the weekend.

My first stop was at Suddenly Everything Sucks, where I was directed to this article at Whatreallyhappened.com. Here’s a quote:

Tyrants become obvious only when looking back, after what they have done becomes known. The German people did not stand up to Hitler because their media betrayed them, just as the American media is betraying the American people by willingly, voluntarily, even proudly, abandoning its traditional role as watchdog against government abuse.

if you read the article (and I really recommend you do. It’s interesting) you will see that the author makes comparisons of our current situation in the United States and the Bush admin, to the situation in Nazi Germany and Hitler. The article is not about comparing Hitler to Bush. Rather, it compares the people in Germany during the rise of the Third Reich, to the people of the United States presently.

I read this and found it very thought-provoking, but kind of brushed it off as extremist, as I do anything that compares nazism with America. I mean, there is no way America could EVER turn out to be like Nazi Germany, right? We’re too moral and just and smart for that. But, still, a very intersting piece and something to think about.

Then I went over to Ornicus and read today’s post, Eliminating the Enemy. David has been posting on some of the venom that has been spewed from the right since the election ended. (I posted on this the other day). He talks about the Right’s utter contempt and hatred of the left. A horrendous example of this hatred is the talk of expunging the blue states from the United States by Mike Thompson of the e-zine Online Human Events. (click here to read the actual article).

That is why the unthinkable must become thinkable. If the so-called “Red States” (those that voted for George W. Bush) cannot be respected or at least tolerated by the “Blue States” (those that voted for Al Gore and John Kerry), then the most disparate of them must live apart — not by secession of the former (a majority), but by expulsion of the latter.

    David of Ornicus explains:

Naming the enemy, identifying him for purposes of elimination and purification, is the clear theme here, and it is one the religious right in particular has been sounding since the election as well.

In light of the post I just read on Ornicus, the Naziesque situation described on whatreallyhappned.com doesn’t seem so far fetched….In fact, that little voice keeps telling me, “America will never become like Nazi Germany. We would never let that happen.” But then I realize that the Germans were duped into electing a tyrant. I realize that it’s this kind of thinking that would, indeed, allow another Nazi Germany to happen again.

  • San Francisco: No Mood for Tolerance After Bush Win

Yahoo! News – San Francisco: No Mood for Tolerance After Bush Win

Peace and tolerance have long been the words to live by in San Francisco, known for its large gay community, broad ethnic mix and frequent anti-war protests. But days after the election, many residents said they were so worried about an erosion of civil rights, environmental standards and the escalating violence in the Middle East, that they did not know how they could tolerate the Bush administration, or Americans who voted to re-elect him.

Well, I guess I’m not the only one.
