Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

    Apple Watch – thoughts

    May 25, 2016

I thought I would post my thoughts on the Apple Watch after using it for a couple of weeks. Now, there are millions of reviews of it all over the web, so I’m not going to bore you with a review. This is just a quick note to jot down my thoughts on it. And maybe to also an excuse to post my Inception-style photo (above).

I bought this as a replacement for my Fitbit, so the fitness features were the most important to me. In that realm it is pretty fantastic. The daily goal is different from the Fitbit. With the Fitbit the focus is on daily steps. With this, the daily goal focuses on 3 things: active calories, exercise, and standing every hour. It took awhile to figure out a goal that would be sensible for me but I think I finally have it nailed down. I reach all three goals easily on the days that I run, but it’s much harder on the days I don’t because for cross training I don’t do things that raise my heart rate high enough to count as “active calories.” But that’s ok. It gives me something to work toward. I do like the nudges to stand and walk around every hour.  It’s great at work because I could easily sit all day and not move around, so this has gotten me up and moving more at work.

I love the heart rate monitor. I didn’t have that with my Fitbit Charge. It gives me a little more feedback when I’m running, which is nice.

I have tried a few of the non-Apple exercise apps like Run Keeper. My initial thought on those is that they are glitchy. I like the Apple fitness app. The numbers on the face are big and I can see them easily without my glasses. I like the little vibrations when I hit little milestones (like when I’ve run a mile, or when I’ve reached a halfway point.). I love that I can leave my phone at home and use it to listen to music with my blue tooth headphones. However,  the blue tooth headphones I bought bounce out of my ears and it’s frustrating, so I need to find some that work for running. They work fine at the gym on the rowing machine.

The biggest surprise is that I am absolutely loving that I can respond to texts on this thing! In fact, I am kind of blown away by the technology. I can actually speak into my watch and answer texts. On my watch. It’s like Star Trek, or something. Amazing!

I love that I can get notifications on it as well. When my alarm goes off on my phone it also goes off on my watch. I get notified on my watch when people “like” my shit on social media.  It’s nice to not have to be glued to my phone constantly.

There are a few apps that I have installed that I find very convenient. I installed a really great calculator app (I was shocked that it didn’t come equipped with one!) called Calcbot. I love the Sleep ++ app (I really enjoyed the sleep info I got from the Fitbit). I have an app called Cheatsheet installed.

I have some iPhone photos installed on it – my photo album from my trip – and am using it as the watch face. I am loving seeing my photos every time I go to check the time.

I still haven’t quite figured out how to use it with my camera. Today was really the first time I tried it out as a camera remote, and the featured photo is the result. I can see how this would come in kind of handy, though I mostly use my iPhone for snapshots.

So, in short, really loving it! Really glad I got it.

  • Font of Canaletes

    Font of Canaletes

    May 24, 2016

Today’s touristy pinhole shot is the Font de Canaletes.

The second day we were in Barcelona we wandered around in a haze of exhaustion and jetlag (and maybe also sangria).  At one point we ended up at the head of La Rambla. I sat and rested for a bit while Raf wandered to see where exactly we were. As I sat people watching, I noticed a very ornate fountain. At first I thought it was a street urinal. I really did. I mean, I don’t know. They had these things in Amsterdam and men just pee in the street in Paris, so why not have a fancy urinal in the middle of La Rambla? As this thought was going through my head, imagine my surprise (horror?) when I saw someone walk up to it and drink from it. At this point, in my exhausted state, I didn’t know what to think. So I just put the whole thing in the back of my mind and suspended my disbelief.

The next day saw us back on La Rambla, this time with a Rick Steves tour book in hand. This is when I learned that this ornate “urinal” is actually a very famous fountain. This is the Font de Canaletes.  Everything started to make sense. The fountain  dates back to the 19th century and legend has it that people who drink from it will come back to Barcelona. Indeed. I did this very thing.  I hope the legend is true.

    Fortunate

    May 23, 2016

I had a really fun pinhole adventure today with my pinhole photography buddy Donna! We visited Portland’s Chinese Garden.

even my pinhole camera feels chill here
Halfway through the roll I remembered that I was shooting a film swap roll that I received on pinholeday from my friend Jeff. I’m excited to see how these turn out!

I use my iPhone to help me compose my pinhole shots. Here are some from today.

We also had tea in the tea house, which is always a treat. I tried moon cake for the first time. It was delicious!

    Here is my fortune

Indeed. I feel very fortunate. 🙂

  • A pinhole view of Sagrada Familia

A pinhole view of Sagrada Familia

    May 22, 2016

I am getting around to scanning my negatives from our trip so I thought I would post them here. I shot a lot of pinhole at various tourist spots, thinking I could use them for Pinhole Obscura. I will probably do that eventually, but first I will us them as blog fodder for my 100 day project. 🙂

The first of this series is Sagrada Familia.

Sagrada Familia is an immense presence in Barcelona. You will know it when you see it. If you think you are seeing it but are questioning whether “that is it” (like I did on the first day) you are not seeing Sagrada Familia. Its architecture will hit you right square in the face and you will be awestruck by its immense size, and its oddness. The enormous crowd could also possibly give it away, too.

    Sagrada Familia

Sagrada Familia is the masterpiece of Gaudi. It is still being worked on and they expect it to be finished in 2026. Guadi died in 1926. By the time it is finished it will have been over 100 years that construction has taken place! I find that incredible. Mostly that work has been able to carry on without him and his vision has been seen through.

It really is an unbelievably amazing place, and photos (even pinhole photos) do not do it justice. It must be seen to believed. It must be experienced. Raf and I spent a lot of time sitting and taking it all in, which is what I suggest if you visit. Please don’t make the mistake of rushing through it like a tourist! Sit down and marvel at what you see before you.
    Sagrada Familia

Gaudi was a master at capturing light. He believed that “Color was the expression of life.” He used red stained glass on one side and as you move through the cathedral it becomes blue. He took advantage of the rising and setting sun to set the inside of the cathedral ablaze with color at certain times of the day.

    Sagrada Familia

I was simply blown away by it and can’t wait to see it again when it is finished. I am really glad that it will happen in my lifetime!

All of these photos were shot with my Terrapin Bijou and Ektar 100.
