Happy birthday Doug

Life

Today is my stepdad’s birthday. He passed away in 2009 and I still miss him. I’ve been thinking about him lately because he appeared in my dream a few nights ago. For the life of me, I can’t remember what it was about. I’ve been thinking a lot lately (for some reason) about watching him die, and what a profound (and painful) experience that was.

Here is a photo from Dublin in April of last year. One of the things I really wanted to do was find Doyle’s Pub in his honor.

Dispatches from a shy street photographer: Man without a face

Photography

I spent a few short hours in Dublin and didn’t take many photos, and the ones that I did take didn’t come out very well, technically (the roll had some development issues). However, it’s such an interesting place and there is so much going on. I am looking forward to returning and spending more time shooting the streets.

Dispatches from a shy street photographer: sky walk, Barcelona

Photography

Here is another example of an accidental street photography shot. I was really  mostly interested in that ornate sky walk above the alley but when I looked at it later I really liked the human element in the photo.

Incidentally, that ornate sky walk was in a book I looked at last night about ball point pen sketching. So weird!

Dispatches from a shy street photographer – Face

Photography

This is another one from Barcelona. This is a strange statue outside of the Palace of Catalan Music. It’s an optical illusion. When you walk around the structure it is actually flatter than it appears. For the life of me I can’t find any information on this, otherwise I’d link to it. I’m sure there is something written about it somewhere. My librarian super powers are eluding me at the moment.

Anyway, I really was trying to get a shot of the statue but the woman was sitting on it so I caught her too. I kind of liked the juxtaposition.

Dispatches from a shy street photographer – Busker

Photography

The next photo from this series comes from Barcelona’s Park Guell.  When I saw this guy playing the guitar I knew this was street photography material. I had to take a few versions of this. In one of them a woman backed ever so slightly out of the columns as she took a photo of her companion, hidden away somewhere.
