Pope Benedictus XVI

The Rude Pundit has some really good commentary on the election of the new pope, and how it will further the seperation between Roman Catholicism and American Catholicism. Funny as always, but a bit more restrianed than usual.

Also, Father L, president of SCU, emailed campus yesterday saying that they were going to have a mass this week to

“to pray for the new Pope and the Church in the modern world * to ask the continued guidance of the Holy Spirit as the Church moves into this new era of papal leadership.”

I thought that was kind of an interesting statement.

I don’t know why I keep talking about the Pope. Well, maybe it’s because I’m Catholic. Not practicing, it’s more of a family heritage thing. I lost respect for the Catholic Church as an institution through the recent years. And this election really doesn’t help. I was really dissappointed that they didn’t elect someone from outside of Europe. But oh well.

I don’t think it’s odd at all. This is a natural extension of the political situation we’ve all been fighting against for years now. It’s clear that Ratzinger is a Neo-Conservative Activist of the lowest order to involve the Catholic Church in politics is sacrilege. For me, I feel like it’s really a missed opportunity for change and all in all I’m profoundly disappointed not just for the Catholics but for everyone world wide as well. I want to believe that he will rise to the occasion, but my experience with Neo-Conservatives tells me not to get my hopes up. Which leaves me with a sick feeling of resignation that humanity doesn’t have in it the capacity to break the negative cycle we are in. Which puts me in a gloomy mood and I start working on a way to create Isaac Asimov’s Foundation to gather all the knowledge from the inevitable self destruction of humanity because of the path we are on. But my natural inclination is to find hope and have faith that our greatness will rise to the surface again. Even the vile and godless Neo-cons still have glimmers of their potential for good deep inside their dark souls. We just have to find a way to get to it.

I agree. It’s a missed opportunity. I know that a lot of Catholics feel that way. I’m sure that’s how many of the Jesuit fathers feel.
