Look at what some of our wonderful neo-con friends are sporting on thier trucks:

To make matters worse, this photo was, apparently, found at a truck parked at a Gay Pride parade.

I found this on the blog Ornicus. He has an excellent post on the danger of this kind of violent “joke”. From his post:

We may comfort ourselves with the easy dismissal of such “jokes” as mere crude humor. But they are a signal of something much deeper, and much more dangerous.

The Ornicus post is excellent. His blog is a must-read for all progressives, I think. It has really helped me understand what is happening in this country.

It’s a wonderful post. A lot of us have started worrying aloud about where this all ends up lately. The Neo-cons would rather to destroy the country rather than lose, but if we let them go on unchecked then the country is lost anyway. So we are pretty much running out of reasonable choices. I’m hoping the Republican alliance against the Neo-cons manages to mute them long enough for the people to cut the power out from under the Neo-cons once and for all. If not America’s second civil war is going to make the first one look like a joke.

The irony of that sticker being placed next the American flag is overwhelming. How can someone who claims to be a patriotic American slap something so vile and ANTI-AMERICAN next to the symbol of our great nation? It astounds me that the owner doesn’t see the inconsistency. I’d expect to see the hunting sticker next to a Confederate Flag, but not next to Old Glory. I wonder if the ower realizes that by posting something that is tantamount to a terrorist threat he has more in common with the enemies of this country than he does with its true patriots.

Anonymous, you are so very correct. This is the equivilent of terrorism. I’m sure thier stuped pea-brains don’t see the irony. They don’t understand irony.

But you forget for Neo-cons, PETA and Greenpeace are terrorist organizations. The Klan and Militia groups are patriots. Somehow I don’t think they would read it the same way us sane people would.

C’mon, hating ‘OTHERS’ [them there out there] is the American way of life. Native Americans, Africans, Hawaiians, Mexicans, Irish, Japanese, Chinese [just lump all them Asians together], women, gays…I mean really. Did you look at the Orcinas post? I haven’t read the whole thing, but in check out the sign at the end. Lest we forget the Japanese Concentration Camps. Is it the ‘liberals’ turn next?

Christie, you make an exellent point. there is a history of this kind of behavior in our country. I think I am afraid of liberals being ‘next’. I’ve been kind of afraid of it for a long time, and now that this attitude has been blatently represented by the Bush administration, it makes me more afraid.

so I guess the question is, who are the terrorists?

Christie, although I agree that the flag may not be a symbol of freedom to those who have been oppressed by the government it represents and while I do acknowledge that America has had a genocidal and racist past, I do think we have made some progress. For instance, slavery has been abolished; women can vote; some indigenous peoples have been compensated for the atrocities they have endured. We still have a ways to go with gay marriage and we have much more work to do with regard to foreign relations, world trade, the environment, to name three, but I think–or at least I’d like to believe–that we are not primarily a society of bigots. So, I disagree that ‘hating others’ is the American way.

Yes, my comment was a bit sarcastic. But honestly, it takes too long. Why did the Senate JUST NOW apologize for not taking action against lynching? Why was it Clinton that finally made an apology for the Tuskegee experiments? Has there been an apology for the Japanese internment? Since it was only 50 years ago we can expect one in another 10. Regardless, those in power will do whatever to keep those below just that BELOW. I guess the only difference now is that ‘hating’ liberals encompasses more than just minority peoples. I guess I’m just upset because it seems so big and there seems to be no way to change things. Voting obviously doesn’t work.

Oh and Moni, I totally agree with you? Who are the terrorist? You better belive the Patriot Act and finding those ‘evil doers’ will lead to anyone who speaks out.

Actually, the American flag sticker actually has an inset picture of an eagle sharpening its claws. So it’s less pleasant and a little more creepy than it might seem otherwise.

Less the American Flag as a symbol of freedom and more about the American Flag as a symbol of imperialism.

Also, for those of you who wondered why there were two of the same sticker on the car, I’ve posted a shot that includes the other, slightly different one here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sashax/22640154/

The flag in the context of the hunting permit–and more so with the talons–is the epitome of WASP impiralism. There’s no question about that. Context definitely influences meaning. The entire point of my first post was to demonstrate how contradictory these neo-cons can be. They claim to support life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (as symbolized by the flag), yet they threaten, enslave, and make everyone around them as miserable as they are. Maybe there isn’t any irony after all.

Incidentally, my ideas about “true americans” and “true patriots” stems from the ACLU Although I agree that our country is flawed, I still think that our system of government is worthwhile. And it think its up us at least to try to change what we can. If a person believes that our government is completely corrupt and devoid of any value, then he or she should either start a revolution or relocate. I don’t see the benefit in just giving up. That’s the best way to ensure that nothing changes.
