I am a Children’s Librarian living in the Portland, Oregon area. When I am not Children’s Librianing I like to play with cameras and film. I also like playing the ukulele, knitting, sketching, and hiking.
I began using a lensless camera in April of 2013 and have been obsessed with this type of photography ever since. The photos in this gallery were taken with either a Holga 120PC or a Zero 2000. See the links below the gallery for details and thoughts about pinhole photography.
Some blog housekeeping things on my mind, probably only interesting to me but I feel compelled to post about it anyway:
I finally figured out how to remove the home page so now blatherskiteblog.com = my actual blog and not a landing page of slide shows and portfolio posts.
I am working on the “portfolio” section of this website. This just means that I am attempting to curate. For the photography section I am pulling together selections of my favorite photos within particular subject areas. I’ve started with black and white photography. I will change it up and add to it now and then so, if you are interested in this kind of thing, check it out once in awhile for something new. I will also be adding more subject areas in the near future.
I also have a “writing” section. I kind of hesitate to point this out but there it is. I have a bunch of things that I have written over the years that I decided to post on my blog. What the hell. Get it out into the world rather than hiding in my computer.
Brendan’s exposure is the shot of the seagulls. Mine is the poster and Downtown Portland in the background.
The more I look at this photo (from the latest film swap with Brendan of Aware Of The Void) the more I love it. I kind of want it to be somebody’s album cover. I kind of want to start a band so I can use this as an album cover. I will name the album (what else) Friday Wonder.
Here are some other faves from this round:
The photographed and the photographer
When I took the photo above I was feeling a bit brave. I thought I would take some candid ninja shots of strangers. Unfortunately this dude in the food cart gave me the most hostile look known to man. It kind of freaked me out, frankly. It may be awhile before I conjure up the courage to try it again. The photographer is Brendan whom I admire for being able to take candid street photos of strangers.
Meanwhile, under the bridge
This is a shot of a couple getting married under the St. John’s bridge in Portland. I happened to click the trigger the moment the couple kissed. I didn’t mean to – it just happened to work out that way. Interesting when that happens. I like the way the foliage from Brendan’s shot gives more more depth to the photo.
Kids Welcome
I like the birds.
If you are interested in doing a film swap with me let me know! It’s lots of fun.
Last week’s Wayback Wednesday was about my Grandpa, so I thought I would keep going in that vein and post photos of his parents. I am fascinated by their story and want to learn more about both of them. The woman in the middle is my great grandmother Barbara Vakoc. She and my great grandfather, Edward met in Chicago. They were both Czech. They met because she was a model for the photography studio Ed worked at. My great grandfather’s last name was Schneberger so I always assumed he owned half of the studio (based on this photo) but my mom tells me that he went to work for his uncle in the studio.
So they met and fell in love and got married. Barbara suffered from depression, and I can see it in the photo above and in other photos of her (which I will post later). She died in a mental institution after the death of a child and not long after they moved the family out west to Coeur d’Alene Idaho. I have more to say about too.
