  • Skate by Michael Harmon

    January 15, 2007

The first novel of local writer, Michael Harmon, Skate takes place in Spokane, WA and is about the troubles of a skater-punk kid name Ian. His mother is a drug addict and is never home, so Ian is left to take care of his little brother, Sammy. As you can imagine, this gets very difficult for Ian to deal with and he eventually gets into some trouble at school. He decides to run away to find his father who left them when they were young. He has an address in Walla Walla and that’s all he knows about him, but it’s his only chance at a normal life. So he and Sammy skate out of town to Walla Walla.

After a long, tiresome, and awful journey they finally make it to Walla Walla to find out that the address they have is from the State Penitentiary.

That’s all I’m going to say about the story. You’ll just have to read the book to find out what happens 🙂 .

I loved this book. All through the book I was hoping and hoping that things would get better for Ian and as the book progressed things just kept getting worse. He kept making the wrong decisions and I wanted to shake him and say, “don’t do that!” But as the book progressed he learned from his mistakes. Ian is basically a good kid who wound up in a bad situation that he had no control over. In the end he learns that he has to face his problems to make his life better. “Skating” away isn’t going to work. He has to face his problems head-on.

  • It only took me 7 days to screw up my New Years resolution

    January 13, 2007
This is a picture i took for the Candy article.

Well, I’ve already gone and screwed up my new years resolutions about cutting sugar out my diet completely. I did pretty good for a week. Then on Mondayas you know, I was stressed out about those presentations. When I came back to work later There were goodies and I ate them. I needed the chocolate. And it all kind of went downhill this week from there. Everyday this week I’ve been eating candy and sugar. *sigh*.

The exercising has been going pretty good, though. The only day this week I didn’t excercise was this morning. I should have and I was totally planning on it when I got up. I even was looking forward to it! But I gave into that moment where a little voice in my head asked myself, “Why don’t you just NOT excercise this morning. Why don’t you knit instead?” (evil little voice) And I thought to myself, “hmm..knitting does sound all nice and warm and cozy. I think I will knit instead.” And I did. *sigh.*

I tried to keep a food journal this week but I couldn’t do it. I am so sick of the tedium of that. I can’t do it anymore. There has to be an easier way. I can’t stand doing the food journal thing. I even have a nice little program on my palm pilot that does everything for me. I just can’t stand entering all of the information every single freaking time I eat something or exercise.

Also, I haven’t started the hypnosis yet. I am waiting until payday, which is next week, to download the e-book from Audible.com. I’m kind of excited to try that.

So hopefully next week I will show a little bit more self-control. This week was just a stressful one.

  • Minimum Wage and Eastern Washingon

    January 11, 2007

I stumbled across an article in the New York Times this morning that addresses a local issue (which is also a national issue); The Minimum Wage. In Washington the Minimum Wage is the highest in the Nation at $7.93. The article is about people from Western Idaho crossing the State Line to work in Eastern Washingon because the min. wage 54% higher in Washington than it is in Idaho. A decade ago when the WA min. wage hike was proposed, there were many people arguing that it would cause small business in WA to go under. But you know what? The opposite has happened:

Nearly a decade ago, when voters in Washington approved a measure that would give the state’s lowest-paid workers a raise nearly every year, many business leaders predicted that small towns on this side of the state line would suffer.

But instead of shriveling up, small-business owners in Washington say they have prospered far beyond their expectations. In fact, as a significant increase in the national minimum wage heads toward law, businesses here at the dividing line between two economies — a real-life laboratory for the debate — have found that raising prices to compensate for higher wages does not necessarily lead to losses in jobs and profits.

It makes sense, doesn’t it? If people are making more money then they will spend it. It’s really quite logical. If they can barely afford to buy groceries then they certainly won’t be able to afford luxeries such as going out to a locally owned restaurant to eat a nice dinner. So in Washingon the higher Minimum wage has helped everyone all around.

So let’s raise it nationally already.

  • It went well

    January 10, 2007

I was so exhausted after work yesterday that it was all I could do to just make dinner and veg out in front of the television. But the presentations went well. Thank you all for your moral support and good vibes :).

I only did three periods, but I was spent when I was finished. My voice was thrashed. And I was really kind of sick of saying the same thing over and over for three hours. Honestly, I’ve got to hand it to teachers. That is one hard job. To have to do that all day? Wow. I am in awe of you!
