Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

  • What songs make your cry?

    July 25, 2017

I have nothing really to post today except this question that I find rather fascinating. I am not in a sad mood today, and I don’t really want to be in a sad mood. But I need blog fodder.

I heard this question asked in an interview on a podcast recently and I thought it was a great question.

There are a lot of songs that make me cry. Recently this particular song has been doing it for me. Which is really annoying because it gets a lot of airplay on the radio and every time it plays the tears come welling up. I’m not even sure if I even like the song. I think I do, though. It’s just so sad.

OK, that was the first time I’ve seen the video. I didn’t know it was on the “13 Reasons Why” soundtrack. I have not seen the show but I have read the book. I have mixed feelings about it. I enjoyed reading it but I think it kind of glorifies suicide, and I have heard people say this is especially true of the show.

So OK then. For some reason this makes the song less sad to me. Isn’t that weird?

    What songs make you cry?

    Monday runday

    July 24, 2017

Since I went to a meditation retreat yesterday, I had to push my long run back to Monday. Today I added half a mile and ran 8.5 miles. It felt good! Really not much else to say about that except now I need a nap! 😴
My after run snack was avocado toast topped with poached eggs. This was my first try making poached eggs so it’s not pretty. But it was yum. 🙂
Today’s power song was Oh My God by Ida Maria

  • All dreams will vanish

    All dreams will vanish

    July 23, 2017

If today were a dream it would go something like this:

I find myself standing on a stage in a play in front of an audience. I am supposed to speak my lines. But I don’t know my lines. Everyone is looking to me to say my lines so they can do their thing but I don’t know my lines. I stand there on the stage in front of everyone like a deer in the headlights.

So yeah. I was the precentor (bell ringer, and the person who was supposed to lead the chanting) for a meditation retreat today. Only, I’ve never really done this before and I didn’t know what to do. That was awkward.

Regardless, it was a good day and a nice retreat. Nobody really noticed, it turns out. Or if they did they were OK with it. It was my own ego that had the problem. It was an interesting and humbling day.

Both gain and loss, and right and wrong –
once and for all get rid of them.
When you are no longer asleep,
all dreams will vanish by themselves.

    – from Affirming Faith In Mind by Kanchi Sosan Zenji (the poem  we chanted today)

  • Further down the rabbit hole

    Further down the rabbit hole

    July 22, 2017

Really enjoying “Her Husband,” the book about Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath I started reading last week. Since I started reading it I have checked out the most recent version of “the Unabridged Journals Of Sylvia Plath” and today my library hold for “Birthday Letters” came in.  Also, this morning I  happened to find “The Colossus” at the Friends Of The Library book sale so I went ahead and picked it up. So further down the rabbit hole I go.

The book feels a bit anachronistic so if I hadn’t read a biography of Plath previously I would find it frustrating. But instead I’m really loving it. I’m enjoying the way Middlebrook is bringing the couple’s  poetry into the story. I am going to like reading the poetry she references. Really looking forward to diving into Plath’s Journals.

Reading this book kind of feels like watching a train wreck. Their relationship is awful but it’s hard to look away for reasons I can’t pinpoint. At this point in my research I can’t see that he was abusive, but I think this is the general glossing over of Hughes’s behavior that I’ve been hearing about. My honest opinion of the pair at the moment is that I find them both a little irritating and completely egotistical. It’s kind of like reading a good novel where you really can’t stand the characters, but you you can’t stop reading it because there are other compelling reasons to keep going, like the writing is really good.

  • Pinhole in the Library

    Pinhole in the Library

    July 21, 2017

I brought my Reality So Subtle to work with me last month to play with. Again, I made a shot each with both pinholes. I am going to be displaying my pinhole photos in the library at the end of the year and am working on a theme of “Pinhole In The Library.” For the shots that I made I was trying to channel the library ghost (which is a thing, btw. We have ghost in the library). But, alas, I moved to too fast for pinhole. I’ll try again.

Top pinhole at 1 minute 41 seconds.

The above shot was taken using the top pinhole, so it angles upward more. As you can see this camera has a gnarly vignette with the top pinhole, which I will end up cropping out in future shots. This particular one, for reasons completely unknown to me, made Flickr’s Explore a few weeks ago.

This one was taken using the bottom pinhole. Less vignetting.

For both of these shots I used Acros 100.
