Foolish gibberish

  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

    Jake the Alligator Man

Stoked! Raf and I will be going to Cape Disappointment (on the Washington coast) next week while i will be on vacation. I think I might see if we can stay a night in Long Beach, as well.

I have fond memories of Long Beach. We stayed there when I was a kid. I remember visiting  Marsh’s Free Museum and seeing the Jake, the Alligator Man.  I was totally fascinated by this horrific thing. So fascinated that I bought a postcard that featured the alligator man and brought it to show-and-tell at school the next week. God. It embarrasses me to think about what my teacher must have thought of me when I brought in a picture of this totally horrific looking creature in to school to show all of the other children.

    Forest Fires

I’ve been feeling foggy lately. I don’t know what is wrong with me. I just have not motivation at all. I feel bored. Boring. I want to create. I want to be an artist. I want to write poetry! but I can’t sit down and do anything! I feel blocked. I can’t even bring myself to blog. ugh.

I’ve now lived here in Spokane for a year. And it’s almost been a year since Hurricane Katrina. I feel like it’s been that long since I’ve wanted to blog about political things. I just don’t have it in me. I think my anger over Bush’s response to the victims of New Orleans has silenced me. I don’t know what the hell to say anymore. I feel silenced. I have lost words. It just seems unreal to me that we still have this man as our president after all he has done to ruin our country. What more is there to say about that? you know?

I haven’t been able to breathe since our hike yesterday. I think there are fires or something because the air quality here is shitty. And going up to the “fresh mountain air” of Mount Spokane didn’t help. In fact, I think it made it worse. I just felt awful hiking around. And my lungs still burn.

  • A bird and a dog

    August 12, 2006

Last Monday I was sitting under a tree at Manito Park knitting (while Raf was running). This little gull came right up to me and just kind of hung out near me. I thought he was so cute so I took a picture.

Right after I took this I heard a loud splash and noticed a dog had jumped into the duck pond! At first I thought it was kind of funny but then I was getting kind of concerned because it wouldn’t come to the person who was calling it and it looked like it was confused. It kept swimming around in circles and it appeared to not hear the person calling it’s name. I found out that the owner of the dog wasn’t even around and that the person who was trying to get it out of the pond was the neighbor, who already had two (leashed) dogs in tow. Eventually, she enlisted a random couple who was out for a walk to call for it while she got the owner of the dog.

So this other lady is calling it’s name and I can tell she is starting to kind of panic. I also am feeling kind of uneasy because at this point the dog had been in there for a long time. I decided to walk over to this lady and ask if we should call 911 (since I had my cell phone with me). She told me that the dog was deaf and was also epileptic! It was weird because she kept swiming toward something and then at a certain point would turn around and swim in the opposite direction. I could tell she was getting really tired because she was panting really hard. I was getting upset. I DID NOT want to watch a dog drown in the duck pond that day!

We finally decided to call 911 and they refered me to Spokanimal (Spokane’s humane society), who referred me to someone else and I ended up having to leave a message! This was no good! at this point the owner of the dog was there. He was 9. I’m sorry, but I’m not letting a 9 year old swim out in a gross duck pond to save a dog. Why did the owner send the kid? Did they not care about thier fucking dog?!?

Quite a few people were now gathered around and several of us called 911 and Spokanimal several more times. He FINALLY came! But the guy really wasn’t able to do much either. Nobody wanted to wade out into the toxic duck pond to save the dog. He threw a stick in the water close to shore and it actually worked. The dog instinctively grabbed it and since it was closer to shore it saw it’s owner, the boy, and swam to him. Yay! We got it out of the water.

It was strange because when the boy let go for a second to put on the leash the dog started right for the water again! but we grabbed it and held it back.

    What a strange experience.

Moral of the story? Keep your fucking dog inside a fenced-in yard. And if you are taking it for a walk KEEP IT ON A LEASH. I hate dog owners who don’t take care of thier dogs.

It’s unfortunate that  congress passed “The Deleting Online Predators Act (DOPA)” (don’t you love the names of these bills?). Unfortunate because it does not allow children to access websites that utilize social networking web technology. Yes these sites include websites like My Space. BUT other very useful websites utilize this technology, as well. Amazon.com is one of them. So we are not going to let children in public libraries and schools visit Amazon? I have to agree with the author of this article:

If anything, schools and libraries should be encouraging kids to use blogging and social networking services. They have enormous educational potential for such things as writing, interviewing, collaborative research, media literacy, and photography, but even if not used as part of a formal supervised education program, they encourage kids to communicate and reach out to others.
