  • AboutI am also known as CraftyMoni elsewhere on the web. I am a Children’s Librarian. I am a photographer. I am a knitter. I am a reader. I am a wannabe poet. I blog. Sometimes I complain. I like to swear. I have a really twisted sense of humor. I think I might be a Zen Buddhist (Still trying to decide). Not a fan of organized religion. I am very liberal and can be vocal about it at times. I’m a daydreamer. Sometimes sassy. I try to be compassionate. I think I’m pretty nice most of the time. You can delve into deeper waters by reading these posts. You can see my photography on my Flickr page. If you like any photos you see there or on this site and would like to buy a print let me know. I would be happy to sell one to you! I blather about library stuff on  Twitter. You will also find me on Google+ and Facebook. Enjoy your visit!

A few years ago I was introduced to Fluxblog’s annual survey of music and have absolutely loved it. I look forward to downloading every year.  It is seriously one of my most favorite things. More recently I discovered  that Fluxblog’s author, Matthew Perpetua, created music survey’s for each year of the 1980s.  This year he is publishing surveys for each year of the 1990s.

I have been downloading the 80s survey’s year by year and savoring them one at a time, in order. It is like listening to the most epic mixed tape ever created. So many memories. I thought it might be fun to share some of the songs that jump out at me as I go through these.

He published the 80s surveys in reverse chronological order, starting with 1989. 1989 was an interesting year for me because it was the year I left Spokane for the first time and moved to New York. My world was opened up in so many ways, music being one of those ways.

I am currently working my way through the 1987 survey. 1987 was the year I graduated from high school, so quite a memorable year for me. So far I am finding the music from that year so cringe-worthy and cheesy. For example, the song, “(I’ve had) The Time Of My Life” came out. Debbie Gibson was popular. This morning on my walk to work I heard “Always” by Atlantic Starr. :shudders: Can you get diabetes from listening to music?

Juxtoposed next to this saccharine music are songs like Nitzer Ebb’s “Join In The Chant.”

I remember my first exposure to Nitzer Ebb. It was 1989 and I was living in New York. My nanny friends all went to a small theater to see a show. They were seeing someone that was relatively new to the music scene at the time: “Nine Inch Nails.” The song “Head Like A Hole” was playing in the clubs and we all  loved it.  I couldn’t go because I had to work that evening. I was so, so bummed. The next day my friends excitedly told me about the opening act, Nitzer Ebb and said that I HAD to listen to them because I would LOVE them. They were totally right. I completely fell head over heels for this band and this style of music. It was like nothing I had every heard. It was the opposite of the saccharine shit I was force fed on the radio in Spokane.

This is the memory I thought of when “Hearts and Minds” played on my iPhone on my walk to work this morning.

    Disastrous

    July 19, 2017

The other day I was lamenting to my husband the death of one of my little pet projects, The Great Transatlantic Pinswap Project. It’s been more than a year since the last participant received the camera and no results. I finally reached the conclusion that the project was just dead and was ready to accept it and move on.  Hence the reason for the the title of this post (which is today’s WordPress writing prompt).

Disastrous is probably a bit too emo a word for my situation, but whatever.

Still, I was kind of sad. I thought it was a cool project and had some plans for it. But sometimes things don’t work out and that’s life.

It was with great surprise that the next day my buddy Todd, the one who build the camera for the project, posted something on the project’s Facebook page about 3d printing a new camera for the project. He, literally, read my mind. I mean, for real mind meld shit.

So I had a pow wow with Todd and my other friend Inge (who has also been helping me) and we are planning a re-boot of the project! It’s going to be a fresh start. I’m so EXCITED!

I will talk more about it as we get closer to restarting the project. But if you are interested in learning more, head on over to the project’s current website and check it out! We are going to be creating a new website and even changing the name to be more world inclusive. Stay tuned!

  • Food talk

    Food talk

    July 18, 2017

Facebook reminded me today that 4 years ago I was thinking about my health. It’s kind of ironic because, again, I am finding myself thinking about health and the food that I eat and what I can do to be healthier. One of my Facebook friends shared an interesting article about inflammation and it’s link to depression and it has had me thinking. I’ve kind of deduced from my own personal experience that inflammation has been a key to my physical health. For example, if my skin breaks out I know it’s due to inflammation and I will try to eat better (usually I’ve been eating too much sugar). I hadn’t thought about it being related to depression, though. I find this very interesting! It gives me more tools to work with in my fight against this disease. It’s empowering. Admittedly, when I am eating healthier and generally doing things that combat inflammation I feel less depressed. So it makes a lot of sense.

While I’m talking about food I have to come clean and admit something. I made a big deal about becoming (or re-becoming) a vegetarian a couple of years ago, but I decided several months ago that it was not sustainable for me. I really need animal protein. I feel better when I eat it. As a Buddhist I feel really guilty about this. But you do what you gotta do. If I can figure out how to make vegetarianism work for me I would do it. But I can’t seem to figure out how to make it work and have energy during the day.

    Ferrania P30

    July 17, 2017

I thought I’d have photos of a mountain adventure to share today but there was no adventures to be had this weekend. Instead I offer a photo of something else exciting. Today I FINALLY received my order of Ferrania P30. I’m so excited! I’m going to save it for something special.

  • Sunday run day

    Sunday run day

    July 16, 2017

This week I am back to adding to my long run. I’m up to 8 miles! It felt great today. The weather was perfect. After mile 5 the endorphins kicked in and I was running a little faster during my running segments. I am at the point in my training where I can swing by home halfway through for a quick bathroom break, which I did today. I also took a swig of pickle juice to perk me up. It took about 3 minutes total, so not much of a hit as far as time goes.

This week I got a little obsessed with beats per minute of songs. I am trying to figure out what the idea song bpm is for me so I can compile a smart playlist in iTunes. An app that I have clocked me at 155 earlier this week so I made a smart playlist of songs between 154 and 160. I got an eclectic mix of speed metal, celtic rock, and a few Blondie mixed in there for good measure.

I got kind of sick of the depressing lyrics of the death metal and ditched the smart playlist for my usual running playlist.

Today my power song was “Cheap Thrills” by Sia.

Here are some snapshots from my run. I saw a bunch of painted rocks and also met some of the creators of them. They were placing them on the trail as I ran by. I told them that they were awesome and that really liked them.
