I was working on Saturday at the Reference desk on an obituary search for somebody. At SPL we do this for people doing Geneology research, search the Spokesman Review for obits, since we have a run of it since forever-ago.

I was kind of enjoying it because I was searching the paper from 1980..It was kind of fun to read about what was going on at that time.

But I came across something very interesting. There was and article in there that profiled some people in government. I didn’t catch exactly why they were being profiled..it could have been that there was speculation that they would be running mates with Reagan..Well, one of these little profiles was of Donald Rumsfeld. There was a short bio of him and then a quote:

“From a personal standpoint, I don’t really plan ahead very well. I end up seeming to spend an awful lot of time doing what I’m doing because I’ve been in some awfully tough jobs.” (my emphasis)

    I kid you not.

I couldn’t believe it when I read it. I read it and thought, “no shit.”

I didn’t write down the exact date, regretably. I will get that for you on Thursday.

Bush sends 7,000 troops for Katrina relief – Yahoo! News

acknowledging the initial federal relief effort for Hurricane Katrina was unacceptable, said on Saturday he will send 7,000 additional troops to storm-ravaged region.

No shit! It took him five days to tour the site! Five days! Five days to get his ass in gear and get food and water and help to these people. In the meantime, people are dead and dying.

This is what is most appalling to me. His lack of response and lack of leadership. It’s sickening! Utterly sickening! Five days is too late! He should have been there and doing these things the day the hurricane hit New Orleans. This is unacceptable!

And then to find out that he has been steadily cutting funding that would go to prevent this disaster in the event of a hurricane. Unbelievable.

I was listening to Air America just now and just got incensed after listening to a republican call in. He stated that the hurricane is being blamed on Bush and that the show’s hosts were not respecting the office of the presidency.

Hey, you neocon numbskulls, nobody is blaming the hurricane on the president. Clean out your ears. The hurricane is one thing. And, yes, it was bad and people died. Of course we can’t blame Katrina itself on the President (duh!). It is his lack of response that is appalling. And if you idiots can’t see that, you are in bad shape.

And then I’v heard that some of these fox news pundits are blaming the vicitms. Blaming the victims! They should have gotten out of there faster. They should have evacuated when they had the chance. God. Of all the soulless things to say. Do they not realize that some of these people tried to get out but the traffic was too much? so they went to the Superdome which they were instructed to do. Some of them are poor and don’t even have cars. So for them to blame them for not getting out fast enough is sick and soulless.

There is one more thing I want to rant about. I heard somebody on the radio make the point that he doesn’t like the idea of the executive vacation. I have to agree. If you are voted in as president, you don’t get to have a vacation. Your in that job for four years, 8 years at the most, you can suspend your vacations while you are president. Your job is to lead, and you can’t lead while you are on vacation. Apparently.

That is all I have to say for today. Or at least right now.

    A Can’t-Do Government – New York Times

Before 9/11 the Federal Emergency Management Agency listed the three most likely catastrophic disasters facing America: a terrorist attack on New York, a major earthquake in San Francisco and a hurricane strike on New Orleans. “The New Orleans hurricane scenario,” The Houston Chronicle wrote in December 2001, “may be the deadliest of all.” It described a potential catastrophe very much like the one now happening.

So why were New Orleans and the nation so unprepared? After 9/11, hard questions were deferred in the name of national unity, then buried under a thick coat of whitewash. This time, we need accountability.

These are the questions I have been asking myself: “First question:Why have aide and security taken so long to arrive?” and “Why wasn’t more preventative action taken?”

I am concerned that there wasn’t immediate federal response to this tradgedy. Very concerned. It feels as if we have no leadership right now. It seems as if the Bush administration just doesn’t care. I know he’s been giving interviews on morning “news” programs and doing photo ops where he is “looking at the devestation” and even giving speeches. But it doesn’t seem sincere to me at all. If it was sincere, there would be more help. It’s like it’s all half-assed help or something.

Secondly, as I read more and more, it appears that the Federal Government knew that New Orleans was in store for a disaster of epic porportions if they didn’t get some help to prevent it. They knew this could happen yet nothing has been done, obviously (hence the disaster). Why? I agree, there needs to be some accountability.

I woke up last night at around 2AM and couldn’t get back to sleep. I had images seared into my head of dead bodies floating in water, of somebody’s mother and grandmother dead in a wheelchair, nobody able to do anything. And what can I do? I know, give money. And I have. But this is big. This requires much more than me giving money. And it seems as if nothing is being done. It’s frustrating.

Bodies, gunfire and chaos in New Orleans’ streets – Yahoo! News

Rotting bodies littered the flooded streets of New Orleans on Thursday and escalating violence threatened all-out anarchy as thousands of survivors of Hurricane Katrina pleaded to be evacuated, or even just fed.

The historic jazz city has fallen prey to armed looters since Katrina tore through and it now more closely resembles Haiti or another Third World trouble spot in a refugee crisis than one of America’s most popular vacation centers.

I’m so saddened by this. I can’t believe how bad things have gotten down there. Why is nothing being done to help these poor people!?! where are the rescue crews? WTF?!?

I read an article today about how they can’t find Fats Domino. But am relieved to find out that they rescued him and he is okay.

God help the people of New Orleans.

  • how can this be?

    August 31, 2005

    CNN.com – New Orleans evacuations under way – Aug 31, 2005

“We are gravely concerned about the potential for cholera, typhoid and dehydrating diseases,” Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt said.

I’ve been trying to keep up with the news about New Orleans today, and it seems that everytime I looked, the news is worse. Thousands of people dead?!? How can this be? And how, in this day and age, do we have all of these people getting typhoid? This devestation is so unbelievable! I am so saddened by this. New Orleans. Will it ever be the same after this?
