    Charlotte Observer | 05/21/2005 | `Apprentice’ winner is a woman for 1st time

In the previous two “Apprentice” finales, Trump chose cigar business owner Bill Rancic to oversee the Trump International Hotel and Tower in Chicago and software executive Kelly Perdew to work on the Trump Place real estate development and Trump Ice bottled water projects in New York.

I’m kind of pissed off about the Apprentice finale. I mean, I’m stoked that a woman finally won it. I think that is awesome. But the “jobs” that the winner had to choose from were really sexist, I thought. The winner could choose between coordinating the next Miss America (or Universe – I can’t remember) pageant, or “redecorating Trump’s palm beach masion” as Tina Fey put it on last saturday’s SNL Weekend Update. I was really bothered by these choices as I was watching the show, and I am still bothered by them now. What, does Trump think that a woman can’t handle the same kinds of projects that he gave to the two men who won?

Seriously, I really don’t know if I will watch the next season because of this. What a total disappointment.

  • Nancy Grace at her book party for her new book...

VIEW / Guilty or not, here she comes — Nancy Grace brings mob justice to CNN

if one looks at every page of every transcript since “Nancy Grace” debuted three months ago, the program more closely resembles a torch-bearing mob than the “legal issues” show that CNN promised. Grace has created her own parallel universe in which guests are berated for advocating due process, panelists are invited back frequently if they make ad hominem attacks and suspects are seemingly guilty until proven innocent.

As I’ve mentioned before, I don’t have cable, and, therefore, don’t watch these infotainment news channels such as CNN, MSNBC, and the king of them all, Fox “news”. I realized, while on my trip to Louisville, that I was not missing out AT ALL.

As I was flipping through the channels on my hotel television I came across this Nancy Grace woman, and was rather horrified. I kind of stared at the television in disbelief for a few minutes. Not believing that this shrill, awful woman was on television. At the time I didn’t know I was watching CNN.

This woman was very stupid. She was saying really stupid things that didn’t warrant her to devote a television show to them. She was incessently droning on and on about a serial killer and that he should just fry, and why are we spending our taxpayer dollars on letting this person sit on death row and getting the chance to have his case appealed. She would go on and on with details about what he did to his victims to make her point. And she went into grusome details, too. I was getting grossed out by the details. The lawyer she was talking to voiced what I was thinking in my head. He had this look on his face like he was thinking, “Is this woman THAT stupid?” and he said, “Nancy, we live in a country in which we rule by law.” Duh.

  • I LOVE this idea! I discovered it via The Tattered Coat.
Here are the rules, according to Feministe (whom Matt from Tattered Coat pointed to):

You know the deal: If it’s Friday somewhere, it’s time for the Friday Random Ten. Upload your mp3s, set to random, list the first ten that play.

I think it’s easier, if I’m at work, to just turn on my iPod, browse to the song category, and set to random. The problem I could see with this, though, is that I have books on my iPod, too. So I will have to figure that out when I come across a book. But for now, here’s my random 10:

    1. Sabotage – The Beastie Boys
      Ill Communication
    2. This Love – Maroon 5
      Songs About Jane
    3. Everything’s Hazy – Squirell Nut Zippers
      Hot [ENHANCED CD]
    4. Golden Years – David Bowie
    5. Close To Me – The Cure – Staring at the Sea
Staring at the Sea: The Singles
    6. On the Road Again -Willie Nelson –
      Stars & Guitars
    7. Homecoming/the death of St. Jimmy/ etc. – Green Day
      American Idiot
    8. We Got The – Beastie Boys
      To The 5 Boroughs
    9. Subterranean Homesick Blues – Bob Dylan
      Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits
    10. Landslide – Fleetwood Mac
      The Dance

That was fun! All really good songs randomly picked. nice.

  • Ann Coulter
    Image via Wikipedia

I was up in the lunchroom today reading the May 16th edition of Time Magazine. I didn’t get any further than the letters to the Editor, which were devoted to the dichotomy between those against the Coulter cover story and those who loved it. The letters were arranged so that every other one would be a “for” and the next one would be an “against”, etc. I was kind of amused by the difference between the two kinds of people. I will just post a couple here so you can see what I was amused by:

While I respect Ann Coulter’s intellect, I feel that the offensive comments she has made over the years have hurt her [April 25]. Diverse points of view should, of course, be brought to the table, but how does wishing, as Coulter did in 2002, that Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh had blown up the New York Times building contribute to the political dialogue? Coulter could use her fame to promote valuable intellectual debate. Instead, she wastes it on personal attacks that do nothing to advance discussion of real issues.

    STEVEN M. CLAYTON Ocean, N.J.

Okay..that was a good, objective, letter, I think. No name calling. Just telling the truth. Don’t you think? All of the letters against the Coulter cover story had a similar tone and level of intellect, with varying degrees of anger.

Okay, here are a couple of letters from those who liked the article:

Thank you for the story on Coulter. She’s a gutsy woman who tells it like it is. We need more of that these days!

    KATIE GRAHAM Grand Blanc, Mich.

    Here is another one:

Coulters’s quick wit is the slap in the face that awakens us from the stupor of liberalism. Go girl, go! TIME’S story focused on her throwaway statements and missteps to the exclusion of her brilliant recovery in debate and the dazzling and unflinching acumen she displays as a guest television commentator.

LINDA GRACE STONE Palo Alto, Calif.

Ugh! oh, I just have to post one more:

Instead of calling someone a big fat idiot or a lying liar, Coulter has elevated the put-down to an art form. Watching liberals squirm when she launches her attacks is a real pleasure.

BRIAN GREENE Decatur, Ga. (my emphasis)

Aren’t the responses of the neocons hella annoying? The most annoying thing about it is that they are getting pleasure by my getting annoyed. It’s this terrible recursive loop.

The last one is the one that really bothers me. The problem, as I see it, is that fans of Coulter are, for lack of a better term, retarded (no offense to the mentally challenged). They are intellectually retarded (and now thier point is made because I’m now an elitist. Ugh! This conversation is so frustrating!). You can plainly see that those against Coulter, the progressives, are ready to move the dialouge forward. I think that all of those people would love to engage in meaningful political discourse that moves this country forward. But the Coulter lovers are stuck in this stage, this school yard attitude, where they enjoy watching thier “enemies” squirm. They don’t care about the discourse at all. They don’t want it. They just want to see us squirm. They think it’s funny. They get pleasure from it. It’s a retarded, immature attitude. And it’s doing nothing to bridge the divide.

Frankly, I don’t feel I can talk to these people. I had a conversation with one of my co-workers about this after I read these letters. She reminded me of Zell Miller’s infamous duel challenge last summer after the GOP convention. How do to talk to somebody like that? You don’t. You back slowly away from them toward the door.

  • Cover of "The Birds (Collector's Edition)...
Cover of The Birds (Collector's Edition)

Did you know that Hitchcock had a home in Scotts Valley? It’s true. Scotts Valley is a mere hop away from Santa Cruz and the Coast. Apparently he was very fond of his second home here.

I say this because I am convinced, since he lived in the area, that his movie, The Birds, had to be somewhat based on a phenomenon that happens around here, and that I experienced yesterday evening as I was innocently taking my grocery cart to it’s proper storage area at Trader Joes.

So let me set the mood a little bit. The fog was rolling in, so there was a certain ominousness in the air. It’s always a little fun and creepy when the fog rolls in. At least I think so.

So I’m walking back to my car, and I feel something grab my hair and pull up on it. At the same time I see a shadow swoop over me. It didn’t hurt, but was rather startling. I realized that it was a bird. I screamed a little bit, as I was kind of surprised. When I gathered my wits a second later, I noticed that the bird was continuing to dive-bomb me, though the last go-around he (or she) missed. When I noticed this I followed the bird with my eyes and saw that it landed on a car. It looked me dead in the eyes (I kid you not) and took off again, aimed right toward me. This fucking bird was attacking me. I didn’t wait around for it to claw me again, I just started running to my car! I felt like an utter dork, but I don’t care. The movie, The Birds kind of messed me up like that. Gave me a fear of attacking birds.

As I was pulling out of the parking lot, I noticed this older lady kind of waiting on the sidewalk. I thought she looked either impatient or distraught. I couldn’t help but wonder if she was afraid to walk across the parking lot!

This is not the first time this has happened. It happens every spring, actually. The magpies are fiercely protecting thier eggs from crows. I fucking hate it. Everytime it happens its freaky. I mean, the bird’s claws grab hold of your hair! One time (actually, it was the day my husband proposed to me…again it was in May) a magpie or crow actually drew blood! Thank god we didn’t take it as a bad omen .
