  • “And they call THAT art!”

    July 20, 2012

Yesterday a group of people were checking out the current art installation that we have here at the library: pieces inspired by the book Mink River. One of them is a mixed media piece that incorporates found items: cigarette butts. One of the group pointed out the piece to his friend and said, “Look at this! And they call THAT Art.” Everyone else in the group laughed along questioning the use of the cigarette butts. One person even pointed out that the cigarettes were found objects, but she said so in a way that was meant to make fun of the idea. At least that was the way the group took it. They all chuckled at this idea of using found objects in a piece of art, as if it was the worst idea ever.

I found this whole exchange amusing. That piece has evoked a response from everyone who has looked at it. It certainly evoked a response from this group of people. Isn’t that the purpose of art? It is for me. If I look at a painting, a photograph, a sculpture, read a poem, book, or short story,  and I am left thinking, “fuuuuck,” then that, to me, is art. I don’t care if it is pretty. It might be beautiful and it might be ugly. But it must be evocative. This cigarette piece most certainly is.

So yes, sir. That is what we call art.

  • Plinky Prompt: recent reads

    July 19, 2012
Cover of "The City of Ember: The First Bo...
    Cover via Amazon

Plinky asks, “What have you been reading lately?” Funny you should ask, Plinky! Because I am currently in a dystopian novel reading frenzy right now. I am doing a presentation on the genre next week and there are a couple of novels I would like to finish up before the presentation. Today I will finish “The City Of Ember.” This is a kid’s book about a world in which the entire city has been underground for more than 200 years. Instead of being lit by the sun it is lit by light-bulbs, hence the title. The problem is that supplies are running low and fear is spreading among the citizens. The protagonists of the story search for a way to save themselves and their town.

I am really enjoying the story! I find it very well written for this age level. It seems hard to find well-written stories for this age, but this does well. The characters are well drawn and the plot is solid.  It is an older book, published in 2003. In fact it was the first Kindle book I purchased when I first downloaded the app for my iPod in 2008! I can’t believe I haven’t read it until now. But I glad I am. I am enjoying it very much.

When I finish this I will continue reading Delirium by Lauren Oliver. I am not far into the book yet but the plot grabbed me right away. It is about a world in which it has been determined that love is a sickness and when one turns 18 they have an operation that cures them of it.

Next week I will post the list of books that I am presenting. We are reading Hunger Games for our city-wide read and I offered to give a book talk on other Y.A. books in the dystopian genre. I have read a ton of these books. They have always been my favorite.

This was taken at Wildwood Park in Welches Oregon with a Yashica Mat and Ektar 100 film. So far, I think I like this camera with the Tri-x best. But maybe I just need to get used to using this film.

  • Write about your neighbor*

    July 17, 2012

Last summer a new neighbor moved in and he smoked. I was irritated by this because it was hot outside and I wanted the windows open. Unfortunately when the windows were open the pollution of the smoke inundated my senses. Eventually my irritation turned to anger and I found myself wishing really awful things on this person I didn’t even know. Things began to really snowball when I finally saw this person smoking in front of his apartment. He was scraggly and pale and  I made up all kinds of scary stories in my head about him.

At the time I was learning about Mettā, also known as Loving Kindness meditation. Mettā is form of meditation in which you send love to all beings, essentially.  I won’t get into the details (if you are interested you can find instructions here). I decided to send loving kindness to our neighbor. Mettā is  hard to do when you are not feeling any love or kindness for someone. I certainly was not feeling any of that. But I still said these words in my head and  directed them to my neighbor, who would be smoking on the front porch as I did this most likely (’cause he was a chain smoker).

    May you be happy
    May you be healthy
    May you be safe
    May you live with ease.

Like I said, I didn’t feel any kind of love or kindness toward this person but I said the words anyway. What did I have to lose?

The craziest thing happened. Not long after I started doing this our neighbor struck up a conversation with Raf. He heard Raf upstairs running his tattoo machine and asked him if he was a tattoo artist. Raf ended up tattooing him and they developed a friendly acquaintance. Eventually I chatted with him too when I ran into him outside our apartment. I found out that he was a really nice guy (not the scary person I concocted in my  mind). I learned his story and have a great deal of compassion for him now.

When I think about this I am amazed. Loving kindness is truly a powerful thing.

*I was looking for writing prompts so I could have something to blog about today and came upon this fabulous website.
